Top 10 Makeup Products for Fall

Each season I’m asked, “What’s new in beauty?!” And always, there’s more than enough for me to gab about. Here is my Top Ten list for new makeup this fall.

If you’ve never tried MAC shadow, I recommend that you do asap. First of all, there are more shades than Sherwin Williams paint, and for me, they don’t crease or smudge throughout the day. Here’s how I wear the colors in this quartet: if I do a heavy lip, I wear the white-ish shadow on my lid and heavy mascara; the light gray is a nice lid color for day; and the two darker colors are great for defining the crease or smudging for a smoky eye.  $36 at maccosmetics.com

hissy2. Hissyfit Lip Service SPF 50

My friends and family know that I am never without a little yellow-lidded tub of Carmex (at my desk, in every bag, by my bed, in my gym bag, in the car, in my travel bag, at my parents’ house, etc.). I’m hesitant to try anything else, but unfortunately this lip lube doesn’t have SPF and that’s always been a problem for me (I’m also obsessed with SPF). So when Hissyfit was recommended to me as the greatest new skincare and makeup line (developed by two Australians who wanted effective products with SPF), I tried out their lip salve immediately. And let me tell you, this product is phenomenal. My lips have never felt so soft and lush…I’m replacing my eight tubs of Carmex immediately.  $20 at dermstore.com

philosophy3. Philosophy Lit from Within Cream Blush

I recently discovered cream blush and love the lightness of this one (in Feel Warm All Over 02). I smile in the mirror and with my finger, rub it right on the apple of my cheek and then blend it with my BeautyBlender sponge. Then I use an apricot powder blush and brush that lightly on my cheekbone up to the temple. The layering gives the cheekbone a bit more definition.  $22.50 at philosophy.com

janeI4. Jane Iredale Double Dazzle Dual Highlighter Pencil/Line Extension

I heart pencils. They’re easy to carry around/travel with and never spill. But I always wish there was more versatility in a pencil — this one from Jane Iredale answers that qualm. The gold side is a highlighter that I wear on my brow bone, on my lid or as an eyeliner. And I wear the pink side as a lip liner or cheekbone highlighter.  $12.75 at dermstore.com

Because my skin is already on the dry side, I want a concealer that’s slightly creamy (otherwise whatever I’m trying to conceal just becomes more prominent). This light formula (which actually has silicone elastic technology), blends beautifully and lasts all day.  $9 at drugstore.com

Courtesy of Chanel6. Chanel Rouge Allure Laque

OB-SESSED. Chanel always has great lip products and this newest one is no exception. Inspired by the lacquered Coromandel screens in Coco’s rue Cambon apartment, the liquid lip color produces a patent-like shine. It’s heavier than a gloss, but creamy and smooth like one. It comes in eight shades – the Coromandel and Dragon (both red shades) are my faves.  $32 at chanel.com

Courtesy of Givenchy7. Estee Lauder and Givenchy Color Mascara

If you equate color mascara with teeny-boppers and punky kids, I don’t blame you. But I still think you should give it a try – even if you’re conservative when it comes to makeup. Blondes especially will like how it’s not as harsh as black. And you can really intensify your eye color – you can match or contrast – both look good! I love Estee Lauder’s formula because it thickens the lashes; and Givenchy’s really separates and elongates the lashes. I’m playing with the purple mascaras paired with gray shadows and rich plum liner.  Estee Lauder: $19.50 at esteelauder.com; Givenchy $28 at sephora.com

Courtesy of Nars8. Nars Eye Stylo Eyeliner

This new eyeliner draws like a felt-tip pen and creates a smooth, uniform line along the upper lid. And I’ve never had an easier time doing a cat eye because you just flick the pen up into the wing. I love the bronze shade – it looks great with a pale gold shadow (or a tan one), peach blush and bold coral or burgundy lips.  $27 at narscosmetics.com

Courtesy of Clinique9. Clinique Superbalanced Powder Makeup SPF 15

I’m a sucker for useful/innovative packaging and this loose powder has that, plus the product within is equally as cool. There’s no tapping required with this powder – you twist the top part and it shaves off a little portion of product that you run the brush through and apply. The powder is pretty amazing – it has “smart technology” – it sends moisturizing murumuru butter to dry areas on the face so the powder never looks cake-y. The result: even coverage that reflects light, giving an ever-so-subtle glow.  $34.50 at Clinique.com

Courtesy of Avon10. Avon All-in-One Brush Set

There’s enough clutter happening in my bathroom, so I love the idea of a neat little packet of brushes (especially when it costs less than five bucks!). This set of natural brushes includes a face brush, shadow brush and smudger, lip brush and eye liner brush.  $5 at avon.com
