The Return of Glamour

Glamour is back. How do we know? Hair Styles? Clothes? Shoes? Well, perhaps they are strong clues, but at the Academy Awards many of the women as they were introduced to give an award or came up to accept one, fetchingly lifted their skirts to come up or down the stairs. It is often little clues like this that let us know that elegance, driven into seeming history by overdone everything in the ’80s and grunge in the ’90s has made a stunning comeback.

Not that the runways have demonstrated this up until recently. Last October’s post-apocalyptic, underwear on the outside, bleached eyebrows and blow torched hair were not fashion, they were art. This season showed a lot more of that elegance. Even Alexander McQueen’s (RIP) looks were stunningly elegant, with his slightly outre touch that will be missed dearly. Galliano for Dior came out with some surprising feminine diaphanous blush colored fabrics, very unlike his usual hard edge looks. Armani and Marc Jacobs for Vuitton were deliciously classic. Hair was mostly soft and did not take away from the clothes, but complemented them. (more…)

Are You Into This Fashion Trend?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Here’s where fashion trends collide: patterned tights, leggings and thigh-high boots. And it’s all stemmed from Blake Lively’s Stella McCartney boots. At first I thought these were leather leggings with a patterned cut-out and then I realized it’s an all-in-one gig—they’re boots! No, they’re pants! They’re both! So, since I will be admiring but not buying Ms. McCartney’s shoes (they’re about $1300), I wanted to see about adapting this look with something a wee bit more budget friendly, like tights or leggings.

I’m a fan of patterned tights – for me they’re not a trend, but something I’ve had in my wardrobe for ages.  And I’m a fan of leggings – they’re cleaner looking than sweats, but just as comfy. I live in them (to the point that my sister and friends joke that I’m always pants-less), so I’ve tried on all the iterations and have found my favorites (ones from Spanx with built-in shapers and a tuxedo pair and pleather pair – both from INC at Macys actually) and I’ve also discovered the ones that look like caca on me (Urban Outfitters’ $28 generic pair—yuck!, metallic—woah thighs! shredded—hey pale girl! and the liquid ones—EGAD, no).

So in attempting to recreate Blake’s look with patterned leggings, the first question is figure-flattery—will these work on my figure? On me, it’ll be about the shirt and if it hits on a flattering part of my thighs. So, trying on these patterned pairs would be a definite must. Two pairs I would be interested in trying are these:

BCBG Herringbone Leggings, $119 (left)

6126 Leggings, $88 (right)

The BCBG pair is very simple – you can hardly call them patterned, but they do have a subtle herringbone print that I love – it makes them more sophisticated and work-wearable. The 6126 style is a little more questionable for me (and not my exact taste), but I’d be willing to check them out – the vertical lines could actually be super flattering.

I love long tailored button-ups (like what Blake has on), so that’s in the closet already; and then I have a few jacket options that I’d try for this look: a biker jacket for a more casual look; a blazer for work; or a military jacket for weekend. All in all I think it’s a look I’ll try.

And one final thought: what do you think Blake Lively’s wearing under that shirt since the boots only go up to her thigh…hmmm…

Cold Weather Accessories

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

After spending last fall and winter in London, I learned not to leave the house without lots of layers, gloves and a scarf. To a California girl like me, this way of dressing was a totally new concept and though I didn’t like the temperature, I began to appreciate how fun dressing for cold weather could be! This season, I’m planning trips to cold weather locales just so I can wear some of the following must-have winter accessories.

BR Infinity Scarf

BR Infinity Scarf

One of my must haves this year is the infinity scarf which takes the hassal out of figuring out the perfect au current way to tie your scarf. I suggest buying at least two, one that can be your favorite piece for when you are cuddled up, like Banana Republic’s Cashmere infinity scarf, and another that is trendier like Deepa Gurnani’s Multi Wrap scarf in a tie-dye silk gauze.

Gloves are essential in cold weather cities, but if you are like me, you have that nasty habit of losing them. I blame it my subconscious hopeless romantic that thinks maybe I’ll meet my soulmate shopping for gloves at Bloomingdales like in Serendipity. Until that happens though, my favorites for the season is the timeless Urban Outfitter’s Leather Button Glove and a trendy pair of fingerless leather motorcycle gloves. Don’t have my annoying habit? Treat yourself to Portolano Leather Gloves with Studs to bring a little edge to your outfit in a subtle way.

Hats are every girl’s blessed accessory for a bad hair day, or one ruined by the elements. This season, a cloche is a lovely way to have that 1920s, vintage influence and look perfect all bundled up.

Aqua Studded Wool Beret

Aqua Studded Wool Beret

If you loved the fedora in the summer, you don’t have to give it up! Instead, simply find yourself a felt or velour version. I’ve personally always loved a good beret, and this season I’m going for a sequined or studded style as the perfect accessory to dress up an evening look.

A good umbrella is undoubtedly integral during the winter months so you aren’t the girl stuck in the thunderstorm having rain pelt down on your once perfectly coiffed hair. I used to just go for the pop open umbrellas, until I discovered the clear bubble version. I immediately fell in love with this contraption that let me walk in the rain without a drop hitting my entire upper body and secretly enjoyed watching everyone look at me enviously for it! You can find these at all price points and buy one from Target or a Burberry design from Neimen Marcus.

Spanx tights

Spanx tights

Last winter, everyone in London was wearing patterned tights and when I returned in them people here scoffed at my Topshop purchase.  Now they’ve gone mainstream and are a must-have for both everyday wear and holiday parties. One of my favorites to pair with a simple black skirt are Spanx Chain Link tights that not only hide extra holiday pounds, but lengthen your legs too. I’m also loving the Betsey Johnson Lace Tights in grey for that subtle, unexpected mix of color and print.

Celebrity Fashion Trends : All the Fashion Trends Worth Wanting

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

While I consider myself moderately fashionable, I am the complete opposite of a fashion risk-taker.  I know what looks good on me, and I stick with it – for better or for worse.  That’s not to say I don’t long to wear the fashions of celebrities like Cameron Diaz and Sienna Miller.  While I may not have the guts to wear the following pieces, I love love LOVE them.  Maybe in my next life….

Alice + Olivia

Alice + Olivia

Alice + Olivia make the most drool-worthy mini-dresses.  Every season they surprise me with a fantastic new collection of thigh-skimming dresses that are both wonderfully wild and still tasteful.  This season, my favorite dress of is the forest green sequin mini-dress with the keyhole back.  Super sexy, super chic.  Neiman Marcus, $495

I would NEVER wear the real thing – but bring on the fake fur!!  Aqua, at Bloomingdales, always has some of the hottest trends at reasonable prices.  This fake mink looks beyond cozy and looks great with a cocktail dress or jeans.  Too much for me?? Bloomingdales, $188

Christian Louboutin

Christian Louboutin

I am 5’9” without heels, so I have been very apprehensive to jump into the 3+ inch heel craze.  Christian Louboutin is my constant obsession, but at nearly 5 inches high, amazing Ernesta T-Strap Satin Sandal would put me a little out of my HCZ (Height Comfort Zone).  Neiman Marcus, $875

Simon Tu

One of the hottest ways to spice up an outfit is with great accessories!   Bold, fabulous and colorful, this Veined Turquoise Necklace by Simon Tu could bring even the dullest outfit to life.  Maybe I will ease into a turquoise statement piece with a single pendent – and continue to lust after this glamour piece.  Virve.com, $745
