The Runaways: Backstage with Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning

Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett

Kristen playing Joan

Let me start off by telling you how ecstatic I was to have the opportunity of sitting at a round table with Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning of The Runaways.  However, when I got there I was taken by surprise with an impromptu one-on-one interview with Kim Fowley himself.  I was minding my own business making a coffee and helping myself to some appetizers when I hear an older, crackly voice utter “That’s all? Boy, that was quick. Ok. Next.”  So I take a quick glance to my right and my eyes were lucky enough to make contact with Kim Fowley and he prompts me with the “Who are you with?” question.  I say, “Blush Media,” and immediately he waves to the open seat in front of him. “You have 5 questions. Go.” That was fun, so after my 5 questions plus a few from my trusty coworker Meg:

-      Kim’s favorite Runaway is Joan Jett because she is a female John Lennon.

-      The Runaways’ brave presence is his best memory of the group.

-      He wouldn’t change the script one bit.

-      He thinks Michael Shannon did a fantastic job and was very proud of how he represented him.

-      In the movie he is portrayed as the “Darth Vader version of a used car salesman”

Kstew is in the bottom left corner!

Kstew is in the bottom left corner!

The Darth Vader quote was a perfect ending to our precious conversation.  It was time to start the round table interviews. The first to join us was Joan Jett. What an amazing, interesting and mesmerizing individual. She is so tough looking on the outside but is actually very personal and endearing. She walked into the room and immediately shook each of our hands and asked our names; it’s sad to recognize how Hollywood has lost that personal touch almost completely.  She was asked what she thought about when she heard that Kristen Stewart would be cast to play her. The first thing Joan replied with was “Twilight had come out so I knew who she was but I’d seem some of her earlier films, so I was familiar with her work. I wasn’t colored by the Twilight label.” When Kristen Stewart and Joan first met the first thing she asked was “if she was going to cut her hair and she said, “yah!” She really wants to be authentic. She realized a lot of things. She took it really seriously.”

Before Kristen even came into the room, you could feel the bond that these two females had shared over the past two years. Joan acknowledges similarities between the two of them such as their fidgety-ness, her knack for not finishing sentences and her will to be real to herself and to the world.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning Hitting It Off on the Set of The Runaways

Fast Friends

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning stepped into the room next. These two acted like two peas in a pod. They were laughing nervously and bouncing answers to awkward questions back and forth of each other. They were both genuine and appreciative to recreate The Runaways for a generation that “needs to know about this kind of music.” You can’t get a straight answer out of KStew but my favorite thing she said was in regards to a question about the fashion style in the movie; she stated that the hair is one of her favorite things about that time and that today “no one has an actual hair cut anymore.” As she is saying this I sheepishly take a glance at my own locks and hope she isn’t looking at my dead straight boring hair. :)

To sum it up, the movie was great. It sheds light on a true rock’n roll girl rock band that never made it past their first tour. Kristen and Dakota did an amazing job as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. The one thing that made this movie was “that they used real teenagers” which Joan insisted on.  If you love music and have the patience for a “feel good, I already know what is going to happen kind of movie” you should see it. Not to mention if you are a huge Kristen Stewart fan and want to see her out of her Bella Swan damsel in distress character, this is definitely the movie for you.

In Our Thoughts: Sandy and Kate

Blush is reeling from the news of the demise of two golden Hollywood marriages– those of Kate Winslet (last year’s Oscar winner for The Reader) and Sandy Bullock (this year’s winner for The Blind Side). Do you believe in the Oscar Curse? In these particular cases, we don’t– we blame it on the roaming eye curse– both Sam and Jesse are accused of straying from the marriage– James with a tattoo model named Michelle “Bombshell” McGee, and Sam with 27 -year-old actress Rebecca Hall.

We should note: is Jesse James ready to be the Most Hated Man in America? Sandy has definitely taken the title of America’s Sweetheart from Julia Roberts, and everyone has her back. Good luck going to the grocery store, JJ.

Back to that “Oscar Curse”– it is an interesting theory (and we’re all for theories). If you haven’t heard it yet, we’ll break it down for you:

Winslet’s marriage fell apart less than a year after her Oscar win.

Sandy’s right after her Oscar win.

Six months after Reese won for Walk The Line, she discovered Ryan Phillipe’s text messages with Abbie Cornish.

Double Oscar winner Hillary Swank and Chad Lowe split a year after her win for Million Dollar Baby.

Halle Berry and  Eric Benet split a year after winning a Best Supporting Actress award for Monster’s Ball. (Good riddance! He was a “sex addict.” Forget it!)

Helen Hunt and husband Hank Azaria split months after she won for As Good As It Gets.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Lee Miller broke up the same year she won for Girl, Interrupted.

Emma Thompson broke up with Kenneth Branagh shortly after her win.

Julia Roberts didn’t mention Benjamin Bratt in her acceptance speech for Erin Brocovich, and they split soon after.

Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin’s marriage died after she won for LA Confidential.

Like our girlfriend said when we were talking about “the curse”– can anyone really have it all? Sad day for love!

Should You See Remember Me?

Tyler and Ally

Yes, a resounding yes.

Sometimes it’s nice to live under a rock, as I sometimes do. I haven’t read anything about the movie Remember Me. I saw some stalkarazzi photos of Robert Pattinson from the set and a few previews, which didn’t leave me clamoring for more, so I went into the screening room expecting about as much as I expect from a red vine…and I have to say, I was treated with a hot fudge sundae instead. Director Allen Coulter schooled me. It turns out Mr. Pattinson can really act, and I preferred him more here as Tyler Hawkins than as brooding Edward Cullen. (Gasp!) Plus, the story in this drama is really beautiful – I laughed, I cried, I related, I loved.

I am hesitant to give too much of the plot away –it’ll be all over the Internet undoubtedly, but I don’t like to be a big spoiler…ok, so I’ll make the last paragraph a wee spoiler for those who really want to know a little more. But for those who want to experience this flick for themselves, here are some things to know: (more…)

Mad for Johnny Depp: An Exclusive Inside Look At The Mad Hatter

Friday, March 5th, 2010

My love affair with Johnny Depp as an actor started probably when I was conceived. I know I’m not the only one either. From 21 Jump Street, to Edward Scissorhands, to the Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland, we’ve fallen in love and lust with his creepy characters and also the sexiest man alive himself. Though he’s a sex symbol to most women, he’s a magnificent actor. I recently got to attend the exclusive Alice In Wonderland press conference and got to chat with the likes of Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, Mia, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Sheen and more. To meet the cast was a dream come true to say the least. Johnny gave us some deep insight on his character The Mad Hatter.

The most intriguing part of seeing Alice In Wonderland was getting to know the characters and understanding each one’s point of view. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter was no disappointment to his resume. The most interesting part of the character was Johnny Depp’s outlook on him. Let me just say that Johnny Depp in this role is absolutely GENIUS. The Mad Hatter is definitely mad, but also sweet and brotherly to Alice. The depth of the Hatter is what really got me. He’s sad, crazy, dark and tormented, yet his outlook is so light and hopeful.  Johnny brought a tragic nature to the Mad Hatter’s background of the character that we’ve never seen before with Alice In Wonderland. Where did this tragic nature of the character come from?

Johnny Says:

“Well I think that part of, I mean there’s that whole, ‘hatter’s dilemma’ which that was really where the term ‘mad as a hatter’ came from the amount of mercury that they used in the glue to make the hat. Everything was damaging, so I mean in terms of the Hatter looking in from that perspective of a guy who’s literally yea, damaged goods, you know, physically damaged, emotionally and a little obtuse and kinda taking that and deciding that he should be just as opposed to this hyper nutty guy. He should explore all sides of the personality at extreme levels. He could go from one second being very high pollutant and a lot of levity and then strayed into some dangerous potential rage and then tragedy. It was interesting trying to map it out.”

Must See Movie: Alice In Wonderland

Friday, February 26th, 2010

It may just be the most anticipated movie of the year (so far). It’s been teasing us with leaks of pics, the trailer and the lure of our main man Johnny Depp. Oh how long I have been waiting to see this movie. As an avid Alice In Wonderland fan, (I even used to dress up and have tea parties with my stuffed bunnies as a wee lass) let’s just say I was excited to see this at the very least. To see it weeks before everyone else, AND at the El Capitan theatre, was now a dream come true.

We all remember the story from the cartoon, if you’ve read the book; we all know that story as well. What a lot of people don’t’ realize, is that this isn’t the same Disney movie or a remake of the first cartoon. Tim Burton takes us to an Alice in Wonderland that is set 13 years after the first time Alice was there. Alice is 19 years old and falls down the same rabbit hole she did once before only to find herself in a changed Underland. Yes, Underland, not Wonderland where on her first visit, she mistakenly thought that was the correct way to say it. There in Underland, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) reunites with her childhood friends, the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas), the Dormouse, the Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and the brilliantly crazy, Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). Instead of just trying to get out of the whimsical world, Alice is now on a journey to find her true destiny, where the world is under reign of the terrible Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). After reuniting with her companions, Alice travels to fight the Red Queen and the Knave of Hearts (Crispin Glover) to restore the crown to the White Queen (Anne Hathaway).  I’ll stop there and leave the rest for you to see.

Going into starting production of the movie Tim Burton wasn’t even very fond of the story of Alice in Wonderland-shocking.  He says,

“There’s been so many versions and for me I’ve never seen a version that I really liked. So I didn’t feel like there was a definitive version to me that we were fighting against.”

Tim Burton on how the Lewis Carroll version influenced him:

“I’m from Burbank so we never heard about Alice in Wonderland except for the cartoon, Tom Petty Video, Jefferson airplane. It was interesting because that’s what made me realize the power of it. I got my introduction from other illustrators and music and culture and writers and the imagery would come up in others work. That’s when you start to delve into and realize how powerful it is and it remains that way.”

As a true fan of the book and the Disney classic, I thought I would be set up to be disappointed. What surprised me was the depth of the characters and the performances of not only the magnificent Johnny Depp, but of Mia Wasikowska as Alice. I can honestly say that each character was brilliant, and not one was disappointing. The Hatter’s sadness, the White Queen’s mysterious darkness, the Red Queen’s need for acceptance, Alice’s vulnerability, and each and every talking animal had something inviting that you felt for them emotionally. Each character has something that you can connect and relate to.  Seeing it in 3D was also a dramatic, fantastical thing. Hat’s off to Ken Ralston for creating such a magical world. It was truly unbelievable. They filmed most of the scenes all through green screens and digitally enhanced every feature. Crispin Glover’s character, Stayne, the Knave of hearts was a 7 foot 6 digitally made man, where they only used his head from the takes and digitally made his body for the film. Tweedles was also all digitally made and only Matt Lucas’ head was used. It really is in AMAZING 3D and there’s no other way to see it.

So how was it? Overall, I absolutely loved this movie. For Tim Burton, I thought it wasn’t as dark as his movies usually are. It was very well done, the story fits and you’re thoroughly entertained the entire time. The best part is learning and experiencing the witty characters.  Learning about each character has really taken me down the rabbit hole and don’t be hesitant to see how far it goes. This is definitely a movie to see or in this case it’s an experience, in 3D and if possible in IMAX. Bring your friends and family, you may be seeing it more than once. Just writing about it has made me want to see it again ASAP. So if you’ll excuse me, I have to find a bootleg of the movie until it comes out. Let’s face it though, you can put Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in a movie about a turd and a water fountain and I’d see it.

Playing the Queens: Helena Bonham Carter & Anne Hathaway

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

By Jenna

Alice in Wonderland is set in the world of Underland (not Wonderland), which is now under rule of Iracebeth, the Red Queen. The Red Queen had taken over the White Queen’s throne and is creating mass destruction and terror in the world. With all creatures in fear, it’s up to Alice to save their world. The Red Queen and the White Queen are sisters and have more in common than you think. I recently got the chance to sit down with the cast of Alice In Wonderland for an exclusive interview.  Here’s an inside look  at Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway’s characters.

“The thing that struck me the most was the thing that I like most about the Red Queen, was her vulnerability. And the thing I liked most about the White Queen was how sinister she was. So that worked brilliantly for me.” – Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit

The Red Queen or “the queen of hearts” has a familiar feel as with the first Alice in Wonderland. Except her head is much bigger, and her hair and temper are much more extravagant. She is the tyrannical monarch of Underland and her fiery temper has heads rolling. Yet to all the anger, there is a certain vulnerability to her character. “She’s got emotional problems.” Says Bonham Carter.  Reining through fear can be transparent, as deep down you can slowly see that she’s deeply a jealous and hurt woman. In the end you’ll be feeling sorry for her and realize she just wants to be loved. The sibling rivalry between the sisters is what fuels The Red Queen’s emotionless rule over Underland. Through this, she rules through terror and her solution to every problem is: “off with their head!” Don’t be fooled though, her character is nasty in a baby-doll kind of way. Tragically her character is lost in difficult place.

It is better to be feared than loved.” – Red Queen

The Red Queen 7 the White Queen’s makeup was also something to be proud of. Done by Valli O’Reily, she gave The Red Queen a Victorian look and it wasn’t fast and easy. Helena Bonham Carter’s thoughts on how long the makeup process took:

It wasn’t that long, I just said hours for the sympathy effect, but it was only 2 and a half hours. But to put a bald cap on, they had to get rid of my hairline, so that takes about two and a half hours, and then they have to paint it, and then they put my beauty makeup on, that took some time, and my huge wig. They didn’t blow my head up every morning, they did that on camera. There are two cameras in the world that do this and they just blow your heads up, and I had this huge camera dedicated to me, which is fine by me.”

Don’t expect the innocent sweetheart Anne Hathaway to be an angel as the white queen.  Anne had a fun time playing this role. Transforming into a gorgeous delicate blonde, Hathaway dominates as Mirana, the White Queen. As the younger sister of the Red Queen, she appears to be full of sweetness and clarity. The one thing to remember is she comes from the same gene pool as the Red Queen. “She really likes the dark side, but she’s so scared of going too far into it that she’s made everything light and happy. But she’s living in that place out of fear that she won’t be able to control herself.” Says Hathaway.

Anne was given the freedom by Director Tim Burton, to explore the relationship of the two characters, because they come from the same place.  “So I thought, oh how fun if my character has sort of hidden psychosis.”  The White Queen’s dark genetics aren’t extremely obvious in the film, but you can tell her motives aren’t completely altruistic. Hathaway’s interpretation of the White Queen and her relationship with the Red Queen:

“(She’s) interested in knives and things of that like, and is adorable on the outside and has tried very hard to become this good, almost over the top positive creature. But underneath she kind of has a murderous streak and it comes out when she’s around weaponry. It wasn’t necessarily that they were opposites; they were just sisters who were different.”

The two sisters have a huge rivalry in the film and it’s full of wit and mystery. Both the Red Queen and the White Queen will spark your interest and lost in intrigue. Something that wasn’t expected was how much emotion you’ll feel for each character, and these two magnificent actresses get a huge BRAVO for their performances.

Alice in Wonderland comes out in amazing 3D March 5th

Kristen Stewart in The Yellow Handkerchief

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I have to admit, I went into this movie screening with pretty low expectations. A movie about an ex-con who is picked up by two kids driving through a Louisiana town didn’t grab me, and I was prepared to dislike William Hurt’s character completely. But what the trailer and synopsis tell you don’t do the film justice. What it misses is how complex the characters are, and how you begin to really realize what has made Brett (William Hurt) the man he has become. His love story with May (Maria Bello) is one that I didn’t fully understand at first… I mean she’s young and pretty, and he’s… not. But as the story continues, their relationship feels like one of your own with that guy that you never thought you’d fall for, but once you started couldn’t really stop yourself.

So where does Kristen Stewart fit in? She’s the girl who has never really been loved in her life, and is constantly getting rejected by men. When the opportunity arises for her to get away

Eric Lee/Samuel Goldwyn

and go for a ride with Gordy (Eddie Redmayne) she decides to take a chance. At first I wasn’t sold on her character either, she seemed moody and oddly attracted to Brett (is there something in this water in this Louisiana town?) But I began to like her as soon as Brett made it clear that he was more of a father figure, which is exactly what she really needed. Watching her relationship with Gordy develop shows how sometimes we are put in unexpected situations in our lives that shape us into the people we are meant to be. (more…)

Lover’s Quarrel

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

by Lauren

So I’m feeling a little conflicted. Part of me liked the movie Valentine’s Day while the other half didn’t—even with a celebrity studded cast. I understand that it is a romantic comedy and everything that goes with the territory, but the bad lines, weird cuts to shots of impertinent objects and a desperate Jessica Biel (no one that hot, smart and connected is single with no prospects) overshadowed the cute moments.

I actually thought the acting was great (expect for the little boy)! I took the bad script into consideration. My favorites were Anne Hathaway (amazing!) and Taylor Swift (cute!). Jennifer Garner had the main female role and she was adorable—her character seemed the most normal and relatable. And then we have Ashton Kutcher as the male lead playing a hopeless-romantic florist (shocking!). Case in point: when Garner’s character is debating whether to go surprise her man in San Francisco Kutcher enlightens her, “It’s Valentine’s Day, you don’t think, you just do!” I mean, REALLY? And no, I’m not some love scorned single—I have a very cute boyfriend. However, if you made me from one of the many sexy males stars to end up with at the end of the movie I’d choose Jamie Foxx and then Bradley Cooper (see the movie and you’ll know why he is my second choice).

I didn’t hate the movie, but I wouldn’t see it again and I don’t think you would be throwing away your money if you saw it, unless you took your beau, then I guess you would just be throwing away his money because he definitely won’t like it—use personal discretion on that one.

Basically, this is what you should expect: some smiles, some uncomfortably bad scenes and a little sweetness.

Oscar Nominations Announced

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

The 2010 Oscar nominations were announced this morning by Anne Hathaway and the Academy president. There weren’t too many surprises, but here are a few things I’d like to call out:

Best Actor Nominees

Actor in a Leading Role: I’m glad to see Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker in there; this relative unknown was very convincing in his role as a soldier in Iraq. Will he beat Jeff Bridges? No; and neither will Clooney, Firth or Freeman.

Actress in a Leading Role: No huge surprises here, but I can’t fathom that the Academy will give it to Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side. Call me a snob who thinks there is a bit more depth out there…But I am probably naive and she’ll thank Jesse James yet again. Or will Gabourey Sidibe nab it for Precious? Or Meryl? I’d love to see Carey Mulligan, but I know she’s the underdog.

Best Actress Nominees

Actress in a Supporting Role: Almost every interview Jeff Bridges has done has mentioned how great Maggie Gyllenhaal is in Crazy Heart; well Jeff, the Academy heard and gave her a nom. I mean, she’s no Mo’Nique, who’ll win, but it’s nice to have Maggie nominated.

Best Picture: The nominees are Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air. Oh yah, there are 10 nominees this year. What do you think about this — having 10? Seems like a lot to me. I was ok with the five nomination system, but whatevs. I am glad to see A Serious Man, An Education and Up in there, which probably wouldn’t have made the five list…And I liked Avatar, but best picture? Nah, not in my book.

And one final thought: no writing nod for Nora Ephron for Julie & Julia? Um, ya, I need my money back Academy.

Do you have any strong predictions? Share them with us!
