From the (silver) Screen to the Street

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

A lot goes into making a movie, from the star power to the costumes they wear. Oftentimes the wardrobe can even take on a persona of its own. So if you’re looking to go bigger than just small screen attire, then check out how you can look just as chic as these iconic motion pictures’ leading ladies did, all while sparing yourself the need for a Hollywood blockbuster budget.

Alice in Wonderland (1951, 2010)

Whether you’re into the cartoon version or Burton version, the flick’s inspired multiple designers’ creations recently. Take a look at these recs for Alice’s signature blue dress. Trust us, this is a rabbit hole you want to fall down.

Go with embroidery or a more modern edge.

The Seven Year Itch (1955)

Just as Marilyn Monroe crosses a subway grate, her crisp white halter-neck breezes on up. But the beauty handles it all as classily as can be in the well-known scene, and why wouldn’t she? With a frock as perfect as that, you could get away with just about anything.

Of course Victoria’s Secret would recreate a similar pleated halter playdress; a girlier embroidered dress; or BCBG also has an even lighter silk dress.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)

Holly Golightly’s iconic Givenchy dress in this film favorite not only set in stone Audrey Hepburn’s status as a style queen (after all, who else could make a bed sheet look so artfully elegant at a cocktail party? Not to mention that picture-perfect white dress and big bonnet combo she wore at the races in My Fair Lady), but it also made the little black dress a fashion staple in women’s closets everywhere. This classic frock made its first appearance nearly half a century ago, and its ability to transcend time and remain ever-popular shows just why the outfit is considered the greatest female screen outfit of all time. Recreating the famous scene is easy enough: emerge elegantly from a cab and look through a Tiffany’s window with coffee and croissant daintily in hand. Here’s how you can recreate the versatile look too:

These two simple and elegant knee-length LBDs with Audrey’s preferred boatneck neckline are easy grab-off-the-rack items for multiple outfit ideas. Grab those Wayfarers and some pearls, pile your hair up high into a French Twist, and you’re good to go!

Grease (1978)

Olivia Newton-John made a style statement with her leather and leggings in this classic. And it’s simple to update the look and give it your own edge. But maybe skip the ’70s hairstyle.

Grab some leather leggings, an off-the-shoulder top and smokin’ peep toe pumps.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Sure her character was a prostitute, but Julia Roberts sure classed it up in this floor-length cherry red opera dazzler.

Pick a style: with shoulder bands, ruffled, satin and chiffon, or halter.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

Ah, the film filled with both beautiful people and beautiful clothes. What’s not to love about Gwyneth Paltrow’s ’50s-inspired A-line skirts and gingham bikinis?

Tie up an American Apparel button-up and match it with a Monsoon skirt, canvas Keds, and a cute straw tote from endless or J. Crew. Slip on a bikini underneath for a summer day at the beach!

Miss Congeniality (2000)

Gracie Hart made beauty pageants relatable to any woman who wasn’t born with the grace or manners of a princess. And she totally rocked that figure-hugging lilac mini.

Head into the fitting room with ASOS Textured Bandeau Dress or Tailored Linen Bandeau Pencil Dress, Jarlo Bandeau Dress with Zip Detail, or try American Apparel’s take on an adjustable and versatile cotton spandex bandeau dress.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)

We’re not entirely sure sporting a corset to work is the greatest idea, but Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of the most tragically beautiful woman in Paris is certainly something to be admired, as is the kaleidoscope of colors and vibrant wardrobe in this shiny razzle dazzle Baz Luhrmann masterpiece. Don’t be afraid to shop around at local vintage and costume stores to mix and match elements from different pieces for a little DIY sewing project!

Factory Girl (2006)

Marilyn Monroe, Gala Dali, Yoko Ono, all prominent muses in the works of legendary artists, but no pairing was so uniquely or boldly chic as the one between Edie Sedgewick and Andy Warhol. The Warhol Superstar certainly made a one-of-a-kind mark with her original getups in the 1960s New York Mod scene. Check out her style choices, oversized bling, big sunnies and all.

Visit Oasis for fringe earrings and other oversized accessories like the large cocktail rings Edie often sported. Pair them with a tiered fringe dress with multiple layers, tights, boots and maybe even a large fur coat for a mod vibe.

Casino Royale (2006)

Sure, we love James Bond’s perfectly tailored outfits, but this Bond girl’s sophisticated, vampy evening gown nearly struck the world-class spy speechless.

Try this halter evening gown from Sung Boutique or for more embellishment, this floor length V-neck.

Atonement (2007)

Another lovely evening gown: Keira Knightley’s slinky 1930s floor-length emerald-hued stunner dazzled us all. But we can’t all have Jacqueline Durran design a gown for us. Settle for suggested substitutes:

The Faviana replica retails at $238, but for less, settle for this one or vintage.

Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)

Becky Bloomwood’s frilled frock is a Lanvin original, but we true shopaholics can definitely find the same look with a budget in mind.

A good sub is this eco-friendly ruffle dress from ecoSkin.

“I saw that movie on an airplane and people still walked out.”

Kristen Stewart Does Letterman

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

The actress tries to talk Eclipse, pet wolves and swimming with sharks, but she can’t seem to avoid laughter from the crowd, and she and her host definitely aren’t seeing eye to eye on wolves. Awkward.

The Brit comedian has a whole lotta fun with Aussie morning show journalist Fifi Box during his promos for Get Him to the Greek. Totally offensive or totally funny?

Get Ready for Eclipse: Meet the Cullens

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

A continuation of meeting with the Twilight cast

The Cullens come in together, minus Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett and was mis-cast in my opinion so I’m not much missing his presence. The remainder is here: Peter Facinelli, who is chatty and loves to answer questions; next to him is Nikki Reed, who surpasses her blonde character Rosalie in the looks department; then Elizabeth Reaser (again, why is she in this); Jackson Rathbone, also much cuter in person than as a vampire; and Ashley Greene, who whispered with Jackson during the interview.

Ashley’s hair is newly lightened. “I randomly get these bugs and I haven’t had my hair light since I was 14 and I was at the salon and just did it.” And what about her outfit today? “Stella McCartney.” She said she’ll also pick a British designer for the UK premiere. Elizabeth, wearing Etro, said, “I finally broke down and got a stylist, which was the smartest thing I could’ve done — I have no innate fashion sense.” Nikki, also in an Etro dress, said, “I like clothes and like when people direct me and tell me what to wear.”

The fashion isn’t just left to the girls. Peter droned on about how he thought Carlisle Cullen should wear scarves in the movies and if you watch, there are some symbolic moments with the scarf in Eclipse.

What helps the other Cullens get into character? Nikki: “There’s such a physical transformation that I go through—I have to put on a wig and it takes quite a few hours. We all have to spray paint our entire bodies. We get there at 4:00 in the morning and four hours later you wake up and you’re a different person.”

Elizabeth: “Being on location in these forests and the weather and you’re dropped into the world.”

Jackson: “I start with the boots and get the walk right and I’m good. Yah the boots.”

Ashley: “Contacts, wig, white makeup. Alice’s voice is higher than mine and she moves differently than me. That coupled with the four hours in the chair has an impact and being surrounded by other vampires.”

Get Ready for Eclipse: Chatting with Taylor Lautner

Monday, June 28th, 2010

A continuation of meeting with the Twilight cast

Taylor Lautner is confident in front of a crowd but he also comes off as less sincere than Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson. He doesn’t seem to mind the attention or compliments about his body. Does he ever crave junk food? “Occastionally you really want some ice cream. When you have a photo shoot you have to stay strong and cut it out.” Such control for a teen. Does he have a guilty pleasure? “American Idol. I haven’t missed an episode in eight, nine years. I can’t believe I just said that. I can’t sing. Maybe that’s why I like watching it–because I know there’s no way I could do that.”

He finally gets some scenes with Robert/Edward in Eclipse. How was that? “Usually I have to hate him in the scenes and it’s difficult — he’s such a funny, nice guy.” Are they friends? Yes. “It means everything. I can’t imagine filming this franchise if the whole cast weren’t such close friends. Rob and Kristen and myself are close friends. You can be honest and open with each other. And when we hang out on the weekends, it’s great, they’re incredible people–very talented. We will maintain friendship past this franchise.”

Weirdest fan encounter? “I wouldn’t say they’re weird, but they’re definitely passionate. I was just in Australia and we’re at a big fan event and I was walking down the line on the red carpet; fans like to hold out their arms and this arm had a wolf pack tattoo. And she asked me to sign underneath it.” The next day he heard that she had his signature permanently added to the tattoo. Can he go out in public? “Definitely. It’s a matter of choosing where you go and when you go. A mall, probably not; a movie, probably not. I have my hangouts and restaurants.

What on-set item holds the most significance? “Probably those little jean shorts. I’m going to miss those shorts.”

Getting Ready for Eclipse: Get to Know Kristen Stewart

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

A continuation of meeting with the Twilight cast

Kristen Stewart shares cars with her family—a Toyota Tacoma and a Mini Cooper, which she calls “a little flashy” for her taste.  For this press conference she’s dressed in a pale gray, light-weight, scoop-neck sweater, tight-fitting dark jeans and very high black heels.

Does she worry that Bella Swan will define her career? “This is a unique situation—I get to play her for a really long time. I feel sad after I lose a character after a short shoot, which is typically six weeks and what I’m used to. It’s the one role that has put me in this epic position—it doesn’t matter if you’re doing a studio movie or an independent movie, I really don’t think about my career and planning it out. This is a part I really wanted to play.” How stoked is she for the next movie, Breaking Dawn? “I can’t wait to see Renesme and have a kid and get married.” Has she thought about what Bella’s wedding dress should look like? “Stephanie [Meyer, the author] is in charge of that and I’m sure she has specific ideas. I feel like Bella would want something classic and beautiful, but simple. It would be cream and classic–the idea of what a wedding dress is. She doesn’t want to get married and since it means so much to Edward, she’ll give him everything. It’ll be a beautiful, monumental wedding because he wants it so badly. It’s cute because it’s usually the other way around.”

Does she herself believe in marriage? “Sure, yah, whatever you want to do. I’m not ready to get married. And I have a great family and I’d like that too some day.”

I love Kristen Stewart. She gets picked on for being awkward in the media, but she’s utterly relatable and beautiful to boot. You can tell that she wants to say something profound and ends up tripping over her words, much like she tends to physically trip in public, and that is charming. She’s flawed and it’s a shame that people see that as a negative—I think it’s one of her endearing traits.

Getting Ready for Eclipse: What You May Not Know about Robert Pattinson

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

I saw Eclipse! I can’t release a review until the 30th, but I’ll just quickly say that it’s GOOD! I saw the movie this past weekend and then interviewed the cast at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Robert Pattinson shyly entered the room, wearing a mustard short-sleeve button up, which he left unbuttoned to reveal a white V-Neck shirt beneath. He’s reminiscent of James Dean, who he has named as one of his role models in the past. He looks good with his hair a little shorter (which is for his role in Water for Elephants, opposite Reese Witherspoon—it’s a good but sad book worth reading). When asked about growing out his hair for Breaking Dawn, i.e. Twilight part 4, (which will be made into two movies), Robert said, “I didn’t think about that when I got it cut. I think Edward should have a shaved head in the last one–that could be cool.” Hmmm…I don’t think that’s part of Edward’s old-school charm, but whatevs. Was there anything Robert had to learn to play Edward in the third installment? “I had to learn how to run properly. I’ve always run with a limp/skip and I had to run more solidly this time. I spent a lot of time on a treadmill to improve my form,” Robert said, with a sarcastic snicker. (He giggles a lot during interviews—some of it is nervous laughter and some is him genuinely laughing at something he says—he’s actually pretty witty…which just adds to his appeal.)

He talked a bit about upcoming projects other than Water for Elephants, including Bel Ami: “It’s about a broke ex-soldier and he has no drive, he’s just jealous of everything. It’s like kids these days–everyone’s entitled. He’s completely talentless. He finds this guy in the army in a brothel. And he seduces all these women and ends up screwing over the entire society. It was really fun–it’s a completely amoral character. It’s about how the shits can win sometimes.”

RPatz fans know that he’s a musician (guitar, piano, composing) and had two songs on the Twilight soundtrack. Does he still find time to play? “I’ve always been playing around. As for the soundtracks, it was nice to be involved in the first one and I just saw Twilight on TV for the first time” – that’s right, he’d never seen the movie before! – “and my song came on and it’s so bizarre that I have a song in the movie. I’m amazed Catherine [Hardwicke, the director] did it.”

Does Robert own a car? Nope. “I don’t have a car. I drive rental cars.”

(Got it–I’ll keep an eye out for a Hertz outside to pick me up for our date!)

Check back tomorrow for more on Twilight, as we get ready for the premiere on Thursday and the movie’s release on the 30th!

Check out a new clip from Eclipse!

A Chat with Get Him to the Greek’s Rose Byrne

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Yesterday morning I got to have my morning coffee over the phone with the sweet and witty Australian actress Rose Byrne. When I lived in LA I’d seen her out and about in Los Feliz—she’s petite and impossibly slender, with porcelain skin and wide brown doe eyes. In other words, she’s ridiculously beautiful. Sometimes, just as Hollywood itself does, I assume beautiful people can’t be terribly funny or unselfconscious either. Starting today, with the release of the Judd Apatow production Get Him to the Greek, Rose proves me all wrong. Before starring as the narcissistic and gleefully raunchy Jackie Q, girlfriend of Aldous Snow (a return to Russell Brand‘s character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall), the actress was known for her more somber, quieter roles. Some films of note were Troy, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones, Wicker Park, and one of my personal favorites, I Capture the Castle. Of course she’s made the biggest impression as Ellen Parsons opposite Glenn Close on Damages, a show she’s “very proud of,” she notes. But while that courtroom drama’s taking a perhaps permanent recess, the actress is happily letting her hair down, and she more than holds her own opposite comedy kings Russell and Jonah Hill.  Rose describes Jackie as “the female version of Aldous,” and if you’ll recall, he’s a drug addled, larger than life, sex-obsessed narcissist.

We talk a little about dating musicians in real life—she never has, and I tell her she can skip it. Dating Aldous in the film will suffice and she admits Jackie would be “quite a handful to date herself.”  I asked her how hard it was to keep a straight face around Jonah and Russell as they adlibbed during scenes, and she tells me that “some days were easier than others.” Her first day, as luck would have it, was the hardest. “I showed up to set to shoot the “Baby Jesus” video and Russell was swaddled in a manger and I was dressed like Mary Magdalene, so that was hard,” she laughs.” Another video shoot, though, for “African Child,” (which isn’t in the film but will be on the DVD) was a more stressful situation and Rose found it easy to keep a straight face, as it was a boiling hot day, and the diminutive star was wearing nothing but a “tiny monokini and ridiculously tall stilettos.” Rose says her experience as Jackie has earned her newfound respect for real pop stars. “There’s no comedy in a Lady Gaga or Britney Spears video,” she said. “And it’s hard work, the pop star process—from writing to singing to recording.” While she had sung casually before landing the role, for the film she had a voice teacher and was in and out of the studio.

Rose also says, of her first big budget comedy with the potential to rival the success of last summer’s comedy hit The Hangover, that she’s got a new perspective on the genre. While she wanted to do comedy for a while and has done some in her native Australia as well as “little ones” in England, snagging Jackie Q marks her American comedic entrance, and she doesn’t want to stop anytime soon. Next week the 30-year-old actress begins filming a currently untitled Kristen Wiig project, also under the Judd Apatow umbrella. Rose says she’s honored to be working with Judd again but “totally geeked out” to be working with Kristen Wiig, whom Rose loves from SNL.”I can’t wait,” she says. And neither can we. Until then, get thee to the Greek!!
