Joe Jonas picking up Dearfoams Slippers

Yesterday was a busy one—first I stopped by the Montage in Beverly Hills for the Kari Feinstein gifting suite to celebrate the MTV Movie Awards. Nicky Hilton stopped by Infinity Sun (me too!) to pick up some products, including their amazing self tanner. (Her sister Paris actually has the spray tan machine at home!) I toured around at the same time as Joe Jonas, who was very appreciative of each goody he was gifted. Other brands represented were Montage Hotel, Cesar Canine Cuisine, V-Moda, Super Dry, Infinity Sun, Dearfoams, Capella Pedregal, Mitchell & Ness, Retro Sport, Paleta, Britax, Zico, Vivitar, Sweet Lucie’s Ice Cream, The One Group, Nature Babycare, Dr. Loretta Skincare, Yogen Fruz, dekkori, Jewels by Park Lane, Isagenix, Kamal Letterpress, Nail Garden, Preferred Group Inc., All Star Travel, Vivitar, Happy Joy Sticks, Tres Glam, Sedona Rouge Hotel and much more.

Next stop: Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills for a La Mer event. (I’m a La Mer addict, btw.) Keri Selig and Oceana Board Chair Keith Addis hosted the event. Oceana’s mission is to protect the world’s oceans, so they partnered with La Mer (who is donating proceeds) and created the limited edition blue Crème de la Mer to celebrate World Oceans Day.

Then I cruised over to West Hollywood to the SLS Hotel for another gifting lounge, where I heard about Mesoesoteric skincare, which has drinkable collagen(!) and picked up some adorable doggy socks for my cat and some Body Shop products (for my mom, who loves Body Shop!), including their new deodorant.

Then I met friends at Animal restaurant on Fairfax for a VERY filling meal and some sparkling pinot noir, which is now my newest obsession.

New L.A. Spa to Check Out

Friday, May 28th, 2010

I’m always on the lookout for new spas to recommend and I found one this weekend! It’s called Carasoin and it’s owned by the two most charming imports I’ve met in a long time! The couple, Lena and Tom  (from Switzerland and the UK, respectively) relocated to L.A. from London and brought an eye for detail that I love. Upon entering the space on Robertson Blvd., behind the Newsroom Café and across from the Ivy, I immediately loved the design. It felt one part French and feminine, one part sophisticated and one part serene. And that’s even before I stepped foot in the treatment room. Tom and Lena meticulously chose beds that gently contour to a woman’s body; beautifully luscious linens; and products from Elemis, including blends to add to your massage oil that can target stretch marks or help detoxify.  After spending the weekend moving, I was VERY excited to have a signature massage. The massage therapist informed me that I would feel sound reverberations in the bed from the music (which she could turn off or up if I preferred). She started by dry brushing my body (which helps circulation) and then proceeded with the utterly divine and relaxing massage. They really have managed to create an urban oasis with this spa, the only one of its kind on the busy stretch of boutiques that line Robertson.  Stop in while you can still nab an appointment.

Wandering Through New York City

Friday, May 21st, 2010

This week I took a jaunt to New York City for work and as I always do when I go back, I had a fabulous time. Here are a few highlights of the trip:

I saw Sex and the City 2 and then attended a press conference with the cast at Bergdof Goodman.

I went to one of my favorite lunch spots, Risotteria, where I had gluten free beer and pizza. Then my friend and I walked to the Marc Jacobs accessories store in the West Village and then meandered through the Meatpacking District and over to the Union Square dog park so I could run around with my buddies. The dog parks in New York make me sooo happy. I give the dogs imaginary voices and dialogue (yah I know I’m bound for crazytown).

The next night I hit my favorite restaurant, Pastis, which never fails to please me. We sat outside since it was a balmy spring evening and sipped on Sancerre and noshed on moules frites.

I should mention my hotel, which just opened a month ago, the Trump Soho. It’s on the western edge of Soho, a neighborhood known for factories that were replaced by artists and lofts in the ’80s. It lacks the typical Trump ostentation and the Donald let daughter Ivanka have an integral part in the design direction. Also, the hotel partnered with Fendi Casa for much of the room decor that includes mohair end-of-bed benches and leather headboards. And the bathroom is one of the sexiest I’ve ever stayed in. The view from the bath is of the Empire State Building.

Gilt Bar

Sarah and I, both Gossip Girl fans, popped to the Gilt Bar in the Palace Hotel. And it’s exactly as it appears in seasons one and two when it’s Serena, Chuck and co’s main hangout. (Sarah and I had sauvignon blanc and truffle fries hmmmm.) GG fans should stop in to check it out.

Other highlights included events at Make Up For Ever and Nars, the Makeup Show (where I met with makeup artists and beauty companies), a manicure at Bliss, wine and cheese at new East Village quiet hotspot, Le Terroir. I’m returning to L.A. feeling exhausted but also energized from this effervescent city.

Visiting the New Limelight Marketplace

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

by Lorelei Marfil

From a church to a well-known nightclub, this iconic hotspot has been revamped once again to offer Manhattanites a new shopping venue. This three-tiered arena offers over 60 shops. Brocade Home, Caswell Massey, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, LeSportsac, and Sue Devitt are among the many retailers sharing the newly redesigned space.

Designer James Mansour was commissioned to revamp and create a space truly unique for shoppers. The19th century stained glass windows were meticulously restored by the design team. The Limelight Marketplace also offers new entrepreneurs and retailers a turn-key solution to establish themselves in the New York market.  “When I found out they were going to maintain the integrity of the architecture, I thought it would be something really good and new and fresh.” said Lisa Versacio, founder of Brocade Home. Versacio was interested in the unique retail experience. “From the eclectic mix of businesses to the iconic space, I thought it would really make it a compelling and interesting retail concept.”

“We were actually one of the first ones to sign up.” says Caswell Massey’s Michael Miarecki. “Caswell Massey is one of the oldest retailers in the United States; we’ve gone through a lot of different changes over the years. In a sense, so has this building. This building from all of its different lives. It’s had so many different high points; it’s evolved with the times. For us it was a neat symbiotic fit because as a brand that is so old, we need to constantly renew ourselves and find a new customer base. We think the eclectic mix of retailers will attract you. You’re the customer we want to reach. We already have your mom, your aunt, we have your grandmother. So we need to reach a younger, cooler demographic. We think it’s a cool fit here for us.”

Limelight Marketplace

656 Avenue of the Americas at 20th Street,

Store hours: Monday-Saturday from 10AM-10PM, and Sunday from 11AM-7PM, with the restaurant spaces remaining open later.

A Fashion Insider Pops Up in Brooklyn

Monday, May 10th, 2010

by Lorelei Marfil

Elizabeth in the Pop-Up Shop

Wanderlust, a popular shopping hotspot in Cambodia set foot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with its first pop-up shop. From cool retro Cambodian pop music to Wanderlust staples, shoppers experienced a little taste of Southeast Asian culture. No passport required!

Before setting up shop in Siem Riep, Cambodia, the store’s owner, Elizabeth Kiester, made her mark in fashion. A former fashion director and editor for magazines like YM, Jane and Marie Claire, she was tapped to be the global trend/concept director for Abercrombie and Fitch and then the global creative director for LeSportsac where she developed the Stella McCartney for LeSportsac collaboration.

Her fashion credentials also include a stylist and brand consultant to brands like BCBG Max Azria, Gap and J. Crew. We asked Keister about her daily routine, her career in fashion and what’s on her inspiration board. Here’s what she had to say.

Blush: Take us through a day in the life of Elizabeth Kiester.

Elizabeth Kiester: Cambodia is a land of opportunities–it’s a big, wide open world there–but you must remember that this country has suffered through decades of wars, strife and serious hardships and is just getting back on their collective feet. So everything is new, never been done before, an awakening, which is extraordinary and illuminating and thrilling but can also present enormous challenges and obstacles us westerners never ever could anticipate. So every day is a brand new day for me–no routines, no lunch at 1pm, no real plan. I have learned–and still am–how to be nimble, patient and reactive. You can’t be proactive, necessarily! There are days when we have power outages for no explainable reason, days when I cannot navigate through the language or cultural barriers and have to start all over again. And we are a very small team, so we all do everything. No divas, no ‘that’s not my job.’ One minute I am training my shop girls on new styles and how to wear them, and one second later I am writing copy for the website, and in a flash I am reviewing fabrics and buttons and then I find myself in a tuk-tuk going out to see the new scarves that are being woven 10k away in the middle of the rice paddy only to come back and start packing boxes to be shipped for the U.S. The phone never stops ringing, the inbox is never empty. I work at minimum six days a week, at least 12 hours a day. I am trying to give myself Sundays off, to sit by the pool at my friend’s glorious boutique hotel and regroup and refresh! But this is what it’s like owning and starting your own business. You do it all. (more…)

Taking a Break to Watch the Oscars

Monday, March 8th, 2010

When you work in media, especially covering celebrities and fashion, it’s rare to get Oscar night off. So while I was taking notes on fashion and beauty trends on the red carpet, this was the first year in ages when I actually got to go relax and have fun at an Oscar watch party! I went to the Soho House (which officially opens in West Hollywood today) to the Mercedes Benz-hosted event. I picked up my gorgeous guest in a dangerously fast Mercedes SLK convertible (hey, when in Rome, right?) and we drove along Sunset Blvd. (passing Larry Flynt in a Bentley with “Hustler” plates) to the spot where Beverly Hills meets West Hollywood. We toured the club, which has the two top floors of the 9200 Sunset building, admiring the spectacular views of the city beyond. We nabbed a divine spot on one of the big sofas to enjoy the view as well as the show. While guests sipped on free-flowing Moet (and everything else under the sun), we all noshed on veggie chips, shrimp cocktail, sliders, lamb chops, petit-fours and caramel corn. The crowd, like me, was pro-Kathryn Bigelow, so we were all jubilant at the Hurt Locker wins. (My guest, who works in the biz, amused me with his insider info about which studios would be happy by which wins – all very interesting…) The night ended somewhat early for me, because alas, at the end of the day I do have this job that requires late nights analyzing fashion. But it was so so lovely to have a little taste of fun!

Healthy Recipe for Chinese New Year

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Chinese New Year is upon us! Starting on the 14th, we are officially in the year of the tiger. (And you thought Valentine’s Day was the only holiday on Sunday!) If you’re in NYC, Miami or LA, you can head to the upscale Chinese restaurant Philippe, for some healthy eating out; the restaurant has added some new healthy options to the new “steamed menu:” the Dumpling Sampler, Steamed Chicken & Broccoli, Chilean Sea Bass with black bean & garlic sauce, Steamed Whole Fish with scallions and ginger, Live Maine Lobster with fresh ginger, scallions and cracked black pepper and Seasonal Vegetable platter with or without tofu. (And my mouth is watering…)

The New Steamed Menu

But just because you aren’t in the big city doesn’t mean you can’t try food from this celebrity hot spot yourself.  I had to ask for the recipe for the sea bass, cuz this lady loves her some sea bass and it’s just not fair for only some of us to enjoy the amazing food chef Philippe Chow has to offer. So here’s the Chilean Sea Bass recipe . It’s pretty simple – just requires a steamer, which all of us who are interested in healthy eating and weight loss should own (rather than my fry daddy, sigh…). If you make it, lemme know how it goes!

Chilean Sea Bass (serves 4)
1 1/4 pound Chilean sea bass
2 tbsp Black bean sauce
2 tbsp Minced garlic in olive oil
2 tbsp Light soy sauce

Slice Chilean sea bass in 1/4 inch pieces and lay out on a plate that can fit in your steamer basket. Place black bean sauce on one side of fish and then garlic on the other. Steam for 10 mins or until cooked. Then put the soy on and serve.

Brooklyn: Week One

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

brooklyn Now that I finally have internet (&*(^! you Time Warner) I’m gonna tell you a few things about a place I never thought I’d end up: Brooklyn.

Now let me be fair to the fine borough of Brooklyn: there’s nothing wrong at all with the place itself, it’s more just the haste in which I was forced to move here (due to my recent break up.) So let me clarify: it’s a place I never thought I would be living alone, with a busted, leaky ceiling that rains plaster every time that stupid man above me bathes, powdering my nose in a lumpy closet that what one could only refer to as a “student hostel in Amsterdam bathroom,” and listening to my Italian neighbors shout at 2 a.m. about, honestly, things that should only exist safely on a Soprano’s script, and not in my real life. And if I see a rat move through my “kitchenette,” I’m suing the whole city. (more…)

My Current Favorite LA Hot Spot

Monday, October 12th, 2009

L.A.’s a land of ever-changing likes and dislikes, but my latest hot spot obsession is here for a while I think. Cecconi’s, located in West Hollywood, attracts stars and power players like a reality star to a camera (aka moth to a flame).

Courtesy of Amy MurrellAs a transplant from New York, I found the food scene in L.A. a bit disappointing. Places don’t always serve food here – I’m used to being able to get a bite and cocktail whether it’s 4 p.m. or 4 a.m. That’s a rarity in L.A. But then I found Cecconi’s, nestled on the corner of Robertson and Melrose, where I can meet for a business breakfast or have an afternoon snack on Saturday after shopping with a friend. Here’s what I love about the restaurant:

Courtesy of Amy MurrellThe space itself: fresh Mediterranean colors (turquoise and white), al fresco dining (or indoors) and a nice big bar. There is a private dining room available as well. It’s large enough that you don’t have to kill yourself trying to get a reservation, but it’s not like a big beer hall either.

The food: awesome. Due to my crappy gluten allergy, I haven’t tried the wood fired pizzas, but hear they’re tasty. I have had the mushroom risotto, grilled octopus and numerous salads, as well as breakfast – a veggie omelet and fresh-squeezed juice is a delightful way to start the day. You can have a midday or midnight snacks as well.

Who you might see if you go: Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Will Smith, Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria Parker, Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie, Kate Beckinsale, Sienna Miller, Mickey Rourke, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce Knowles and Elton John. They’ve all dined in this beautiful outpost.

Bottom line: If you want a fresh dining experience that includes both the food and the scene, make your next meal in L.A. at Cecconi’s.

See the menus here.
