Need an excuse to go shopping?

Kara Lusardi, designer of bobi Clothing, is giving you one! From 7pm to 9pm Wednesday, June 23, Kara will be hosting bobi’s “Sample Sale For a Cause,” where you can buy bobi samples for $20 to $25 while enjoying free cocktails and a bobi gift if you’re one of the first 100 people to arrive, and dancing to music from DJs Josh Madden (brother to Benji and Joel) and Claudine De Sola.

So head on over to Revolve Clothing (8452 Melrose Ave.) where celebs like Sophie Monk will be shopping Kara’s simple and comfortable collection of fashionable women’s wear for a righteous cause.

Hip New Vodkas!

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Two new vodkas just found their way onto my desk and they’re both collaborations…fine, twist my arm, I’ll try them. One is the latest in the “city series” from AbsolutAbsolut Brooklyn, which is a collaboration with Spike Lee (natch) and is red apple and ginger flavored. Sounds a little odd, right? But WOW, yum! This with a ginger ale and a lime is such a great summertime BBQ drink.

Here are a couple recipes to try:

Absolut Brooklyn Stoop Party

1 part Absolut Brooklyn

1 part Cranberry Juice

1 part Ginger Ale

Build over ice in highball glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Absolut Brooklyn Ginger

1 ½ parts Absolut Brooklyn

2 parts ginger ale

Squeeze of lime

Pour over ice in a highball glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

The other is Matthew Williamson for Belevedere Pink Grapefruit. When you think Williamson, you think bright, colorful, fun, whimsical, bohemian. And when you think Belvedere, you think ice, glass, mixer, swallow, smile. The grapefruit is actually soaked in vodka (“maceration”) so it has a very natural (read: not sweet) taste. I recommend this one with soda or diet tonic for a light, refreshing summer cocktail, but here are some recipes as well:

Belvedere Pink Salty Dog

1.5 oz Belvedere Pink Grapefruit

4 oz Premium or freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice

Rim a rocks glass or small wine goblet with Malden sea salt. Fill glass with ice and pour over the ingredients. Garnish with a pink grapefruit slice.

Belvedere Pink Sour

1.5 oz Belvedere Pink Grapefruit

½ oz lemon juice

½ oz simple syrup

Dash egg white

Dry shake, add ice and re-shake. Pour over cubed ice into a rocks glass and garnish with a lemon or pink grapefruit wheel

Hello Blush! My name is Erica and I am a New York based stylist and fashion editor. I’ve always worked for magazines, and in the last few months I’ve partnered up with one of my dearest friends, Turner (whom I met at the now defunct but forever amazing JANE magazine) to work on special styling projects. We bond over our love of music and fashion and love being able to style musicians like Sean Lennon, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, and MGMT together. Our most recent shoot focuses on our love of fashion — it’s a Depression Era-inspired story for the website Stylecaster. Heels for Every Girl: low heels, mid-heels, stilettos and more!

Monday, May 24th, 2010

by Holly Clinard

Every girl gets excited about shoes—let’s face it. Yep yep, a new pair of kicks can certainly have me waking up in the morning, excited to meet the day ahead! If you have just the right shoes on, your style job is pretty much complete. But here’s the thing—we all dig different kinds of shoes, all have different types of days that await us. Some of us might sit at a desk all day and get to wear any type of shoe since we don’t walk around much. Others may be on their feet all darned day and need a little extra cushioning. Some of us are tall and crave a stylish short heel…and then others (like myself) could use a 3-4” height booster! And then still some gals are just lookin’ for a hot & sassy pair of shoes to show off that gorgeous taste of yours. Well, you’ve come to the right place—I’ve found a few hot heels right now to send you on your way, no matter what walk of life you come from! I know, I know…it’s your lucky day!

LOW HEEL

Let’s start low. I pay mucho respect to the tall gals out there who struggle to find a good, low heel that doesn’t produce a yawn. I do know how challenging it can be to scour through the shoe racks & online stores to find the shoe that compliments your height and leg-look best. Good news though—J.Crew has done it. Check out these J.Crew ‘Sylvia’ suede pumps! This Italian-made and beautiful 2 ½” heel is a great staple for any outfit, on any occasion. Aaaand helpful hint: order a half size larger than normal. Try these lovelies out in basic black…

…or in chic pink (perfect for spring & summer to add some color to that ‘little black dress’!)

Paper Magazine’s 13th Annual Beautiful People Issue

Party in the name of Paper and H&M

Last night all the young hipsters (Los Angeles’ + celebrities) gathered at The Standard Hotel to celebrate Paper Magazine’s 13th Annual Beautiful People Issue, featuring The Gossip singer Beth Ditto, and the launch of H&M’s Fashion Against Aids collection.

View from the VIP room

The views, the fashion, the people, the music and the drinks were d-i-v-i-n-e! Samantha Ronson (you know, Lindsay Lohan’s ex lady lover) was the DJ and she was great! I really liked everything she played and it created a really chill, but fun vibe. Up in the VIP room I saw Hugh Hefner’s  twin ex-girlfriends, Karissa and Kristina Shannon, who were actually very pretty! They were also very tall, I literally had to look up to see them, even in heels. Sigh. However, my favorite celebrity sighting of the night was American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert! He is actually featured as one the “beautiful people” in the issue. The night ended with a wonderful performance from the band Nikki and Rich who sound just like how they say they sound, “Lauryn Hill meets The Supremes while hanging out with Alicia Keys listening to Outkast ‘Hey Yah’.”

All in all, it was a very fun, very LA night!

A Fashion Insider Pops Up in Brooklyn

Monday, May 10th, 2010

by Lorelei Marfil

Elizabeth in the Pop-Up Shop

Wanderlust, a popular shopping hotspot in Cambodia set foot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with its first pop-up shop. From cool retro Cambodian pop music to Wanderlust staples, shoppers experienced a little taste of Southeast Asian culture. No passport required!

Before setting up shop in Siem Riep, Cambodia, the store’s owner, Elizabeth Kiester, made her mark in fashion. A former fashion director and editor for magazines like YM, Jane and Marie Claire, she was tapped to be the global trend/concept director for Abercrombie and Fitch and then the global creative director for LeSportsac where she developed the Stella McCartney for LeSportsac collaboration.

Her fashion credentials also include a stylist and brand consultant to brands like BCBG Max Azria, Gap and J. Crew. We asked Keister about her daily routine, her career in fashion and what’s on her inspiration board. Here’s what she had to say.

Blush: Take us through a day in the life of Elizabeth Kiester.

Elizabeth Kiester: Cambodia is a land of opportunities–it’s a big, wide open world there–but you must remember that this country has suffered through decades of wars, strife and serious hardships and is just getting back on their collective feet. So everything is new, never been done before, an awakening, which is extraordinary and illuminating and thrilling but can also present enormous challenges and obstacles us westerners never ever could anticipate. So every day is a brand new day for me–no routines, no lunch at 1pm, no real plan. I have learned–and still am–how to be nimble, patient and reactive. You can’t be proactive, necessarily! There are days when we have power outages for no explainable reason, days when I cannot navigate through the language or cultural barriers and have to start all over again. And we are a very small team, so we all do everything. No divas, no ‘that’s not my job.’ One minute I am training my shop girls on new styles and how to wear them, and one second later I am writing copy for the website, and in a flash I am reviewing fabrics and buttons and then I find myself in a tuk-tuk going out to see the new scarves that are being woven 10k away in the middle of the rice paddy only to come back and start packing boxes to be shipped for the U.S. The phone never stops ringing, the inbox is never empty. I work at minimum six days a week, at least 12 hours a day. I am trying to give myself Sundays off, to sit by the pool at my friend’s glorious boutique hotel and regroup and refresh! But this is what it’s like owning and starting your own business. You do it all. (more…)

Globe Trotting Style for Every Kindove Gal

This summer, get globe trotter style without even stamping your passport. Even if you’re stuck in your basement in Detroit all season, you can still dress like a well-traveled woman. Whether your look is artsy, edgy, or strictly chic here’s your guide to dressing the part of a native Florentine, Parisian, Barcelonian or Londoner. Bon Voyage!

Florence, Italy:
In this Renaissance city, layers and earth tones dominate the scene. Art students flock to Florence each semester and their style can be seen in every corner café. Look for cozy, roomy knitwear, oversized print scarves and leggings or dark wash skinny jeans to balance the proportions. For accessories, leather abounds. Tie your look together with an oversized tote or over the shoulder bag and flat boots or gladiator sandals.

On the Runway: Band of Outsiders spring looks exude the easy, flowing silhouette paired with more masculine, structured outerwear. Their strappy, gladiator inspired sandals are a welcome break from the ubiquitous ballet flat. Try Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q-Ukita in caramel for a bag that can carry it all and look great doing it. (more…)

Tips to Prevent Shopping Anxiety

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

This could be you!

We’ve all been there: standing in the dressing room just staring at ourselves in that dreadful 3-way mirror, wondering why nothing is either fitting or is the look we are going for. In my book this usually happens when I am shopping for an event because I always have an image of what I want and a set time limit to find it. This type of shopping is stressful and tends to turn me into a mad woman, frantically searching for perfect outfit. So to avoid these dressing room breakdowns, I’ve devised some tips and tricks for shopping for events with a time limit.

1. The biggest problem when shopping for an important event is that you know that you want to look a certain way i.e. pretty, sexy, conservative, or trendy. However, simply thinking about the “look” you’re going for often gets you nowhere as nothing you try on seems to work. Instead, before you go shopping make a list of what styles of clothing you would like to wear for this event– a strapless dress, a high wasted skirt, skinny jeans, etc. By doing this you won’t aimlessly pick up everything on the rack because you will have an idea of what you want.

2. Think carefully about where you decide to go shopping and what stores you will find there. The worst thing when shopping for something important is to aimlessly wander in and out of stores and still not find anything. Instead, if you’re going to a mall look at a listing online and see what stores will fit your mission. Also, keep in mind the stores that you frequent but never buy anything from—there is a reason for that and it’s probably not going to change now.

3. Pick the right friend to go along with you. In this mad dash you need someone who doesn’t mind the shopping trip being all about you that day and really wants to help you. It’s also a good idea to bring a friend who has a similar fashion sense so they’re not suggesting that prairie skirt when you are looking for a sleek little black dress.

Bring along a great bag like this one from Urban Outfitters

4. Make sure that you stay full and hydrated. Although this may seem silly, you are only going to be feeling worse if you are starving and dehydrated. When there is a severe time limit, I always recommend bringing an energy bar andwater in your purse so you can stay on track and won’t have to stop.

5. Always come prepared with a strapless bra and high heels. There have been countless times when trying on clothing that I couldn’t tell if I liked something because I didn’t have the proper undergarment or height. Also, it’s never a good idea to think, “Oh, it will look better once I have the right bra on” because it often doesn’t. Do yourself a favor and stash these in your large bag so you will have the best chance possible to find the perfect outfit.

Quick Look: Amanda Seyfried’s Chloe Fashion

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Chloe is a suspenseful story of love and betrayal. When Catherine (Julianne Moore), a successful doctor, begins to question her husband David’s (Liam Neeson) fidelity, she sets out to resolve her suspicions with the help of an alluring young woman, Chloe (Amanda Seyfried). Soon caught in a web of sexual desire, Catherine finds herself on a journey that places her family in great danger. (And expect some Moore on Seyfried action, which I’m thinking is a theme lately since Stewart-Fanning also smooch in The Runaways.)

Here are a few of the looks from the film, which hits theaters today:

L.A. Fashion Week Comes to an End

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

As all good things must come to an end, L.A. fashion week ended with a bang on Sunday night where Brand Equity Showroom showcased 100 top looks from Civil Society, Division E, Zanerobe and Buffalo David Bitton at the Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood.

Shawn, courtesy of cwtv.com

The red carpet was full of young celebrities like Mena Suvari, Ashley Scott (NCIS), Naturi Natughton (FAME), Madeline Zima (Californication), Kayla Ewell (Vampire Diaries), Candace Cameron Burr (Make it or Break it) and Nicholas Gonzalez (Melrose Place).

Also from Melrose was Shaun Sipos who plays David, whom I had the the pleasure of interviewing. He told me that in the rest of the season we’ll see ups and downs with him and Lauren and there is “a question about whether you can forgive someone and live with their faults.” Shaun also revealed a spoiler that the season will end with a storyline about a stolen painting that involves him, Ella and Amanda which will result in one of the three going to jail! In talking about his cast mates, he says that they all get along really well and even though he hasn’t seen them in a while due to his travel schedule, everyone still texts and calls.

After the red carpet it was time for the show! It began with Civil Society, a menswear line that showcased classic menswear with an edgy twist as men wore suiting separates and classically handsome looks. Shaun was most excited to see this line as he says he grew up thinking men should dress in suits daily and has always liked classic styles.

Division-E showed their classic cotton-jersey shirts and dresses that looked effortlessly chic paired with leggings and boots. One of the interesting pairings I noticed was wearing over the knee socks with booties which created a less dramatic version of the over-the-knee boot and is a trend to try in the fall.

Zanerobe featured cute mini dresses for the girls and a lumberjack type look for the boys and all the models carried sports equipment down the runway. Finally, Buffalo David Bitton rounded out the show with lots of black leather and layering and although those leather skirts and jackets are in the back of your closet for now, don’t retire them yet, as you’ll be wearing them next fall.

Apart from watching all the gorgeous clothes go down the runway I was distracted by the Zanerobe model who wore a grey wool toggle coat and a feather headdress. Yet the cheers from the crowd weren’t as much for his outfit, as they were his amazing abs. (Plus, doesn’t he look like a young George Clooney?) Another man distracting me was Shaun as I spotted him across the runway cozying up to former Pussycat Doll dancer, Rachel Sterling. I tried to capture it on the left… but hey, I’m not paparazzi!
