Holiday Gift Ideas Inspired by Fashion Week 2010

When you’re searching for the perfect holiday gift to give your favorite beauty maven, staying up-to-date on the latest trends is essential. After all, you don’t want the shame of handing over last season’s lipstick shade, do you? Talk about a fashion faux pas! To help you suss out the 2011 runway trends, here’s a look at three of the looks sure to be seen come spring.

Visions of Sugarplum
From soft lavender to electric violet, purple makeup dominated the runways during fashion week 2010. Whether it was worn on the lips, cheeks, or eyes, shades of purple added a fresh burst of color to the new looks of fashion icons like Jason Wu and Monique Lhuillier.

If plum doesn’t do it for you, why not try 2011′s must-have metallic? Glimmering gold donned the eyes, lips, and even eyelashes at the Fashion Week shows of Donna Karan, Anna Sui, and Rodarte. Shimmering shades of gold are perfect for the holidays, and will give your spring look a burst of sunny radiance.

Perfect Pair Gift Idea: CARGO’s Color Palette in London offers shades of champagne-gold and deep eggplant, as well as complimentary shades of mocha and greenish-brown. Pair it with a silky black liquid eyeliner for an eye-enhancing gift that can’t be beat!

Hairy Situations
The side part is back and better than ever. Shows by Badgley Mischka, Carolina Herrera, Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc by Marc, and Michael Kors were walked by models sporting deep, exaggerated side parts in hairstyles that ranged from straight and sleek to full of body. This season’s messy hair trend goes along perfectly with the side parts spotted during Fashion Week, making a dynamic styling duo that’s both stylish and easy to achieve.

Perfect Pair Gift Idea: Mason Pearson’s Styling Comb coupled with a texturizing paste like Jonathan Product’s Dirt is an excellent holiday gift idea for your favorite stylist-in-training. The pomade will create a perfectly messy texture while the comb helps to separate, texturize, and shape a flawless side part.

Read My Lips
Vibrant coral to neon orange lips, like the looks seen at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2010, are sweeping the fashion and beauty world as the “it” look for 2011. Bright, impossible-to-ignore lip shades look especially fabulous when worn to accompany this season’s 1970s fashion trend.

Perfect Pair Gift Idea: 3 Custom Color’s Light Brights lipstick in Area Sheer is a sexily sheer shade of electric tangerine. Formulated with a silky, lip balm-like texture, Light Brights is a great way to ease into 2011′s neon lip trend without feeling too over-the-top. Pair it with a fabulous purse mirror, like Paul and Joe Beaute’s Beauty Mirror, for simple and stylish on-the-go application.

Fashion Week Brings Trends We Can Actually Wear

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

by Shannon Farrell

Fashion Week can always be a little frustrating for us common folk. I personally love to look at what designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs come up with, but I know there is no way I can actually wear any of it. However, Spring 2011’s fashion week brought some incredible looks anyone can play with and look great wearing. Take a look at some of these designer collections that offered a little bit of everything.

Michael Kors

We all know that it is physically impossible for pants these days to get any skinnier—so it came as no surprise when Kors and other designers came out with wide slacks on their runways. In New York, Michael Kors’ slacks were sleek and appeared comfortable—not over-the-top. Who wouldn’t trade their jeggings for a pair of these any day? In a neutral color, these slacks would be great for a day at the office or a comfortable afternoon at the market square. Add a thin belt and clutch and you are ready to go.

Burberry Prorsum

Burberry is well known for its reinvention of the trench coat—and their Spring 2011 collection in London featured their famous coats. However, they added a little innovation to them with the addition of vertical stripes and assorted belts. Although embellished, the coats are still appropriate for everyday use and will bring the perfect amount of pizzazz  to an otherwise simple cardigan or flowery dress.

Isaac Mizrahi

It is no surprise that many of last week’s shows included embellished clothing, and Isaac Mizrahi presented this embellished look perfectly in New York on September 16. This sequined neckline and “tie” on a simple woven top was the perfect blend of adding a little spontaneity and flare to a simple look. Can we dare wear this? With Mizrahi’s inspiration, I think we can.

Alberta Ferretti

Although we are about to put those sandals away for winter, Alberta Ferretti showed us what to look forward to after snow’s end. The show in Milan featured simple sandals with straps just above the toes and other straps wrapped around the ankle. Comfortable and yet so chic, this look is sure to make an impact next year.

Fendi

Fendi’s runway show in Milan on September 23 featured vintage accessories. This handbag pictured below has that 60s boxed silhouette. The mix of baby blue and forest green recreates that flower girl look and is a smart choice for a spring color palette. Another vintage accessory to look forward to next spring: cat eye glasses! They appeared in almost all of the looks in the collection. For those who purchased them for this season, don’t forget to store them in a safe place this winter.

Quick and easy TRESemmé summer styles

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Models at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim looked stunningly sizzling as they showcased new collections from Mara Hoffman and CIA.MARITIMA in Miami this past weekend, and a lot of that credit goes to all those TRESemmé stylists backstage. Lucky for us, getting those hot hairstyles really isn’t so difficult to do yourself, thanks to TRESemmé’s Styling Team. So if you’re on the lookout for a cute summer hairstyle, here’s TRESemmé Lead Stylist Elsa Canedo’s quick DIY tutorial on how to create a hot-off-the-runway look perfect for a trip to the beach this summer!

To create a textured fishtail braid for the mesmerizing mermaid in you:

Step 1: Apply TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse to damp hair and blow dry to create a beachy texture at the base of the braid.

Step 2: Curl your hair with a ½ “ curling iron and pin it in place. Set the curls with TRESemmé Naturals Finishing Spray.

Step 3: Once your curls are cool, take out the pins. Flip your hair over and use your fingers to gently break up the curls for more texture.

Step 4: Beginning at the nape of your neck, fishtail braid your hair down the back. How do you create a fishtail braid? Simply start off by sectioning your hair into two. Take a skinny strand from the outside of the left side and add it to the right side. Then add a skinny strand from the right side to the left side. Pull tightly and repeat until you reach the end of the braid and secure with a hair tie.

Step 5: With a styling brush, brush the braid upwards, loosening up random bits of hair for a more natural, beach-inspired look.

Or, just follow three short steps if you’re just interested in a simple beach blow out:

Step 1: Apply TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray to damp hair and blow dry straight.

Step 2: Spray TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo lightly on your hair to absorb any excess oil.

Step 3: Add a small drop of TRESemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème onto your palms and apply to the ends and roots to tame those tricky flyaways.

Now just grab your beach bag, lather on some sunscreen and head to the waters for some fun in the sun!

L.A. Fashion Week Comes to an End

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

As all good things must come to an end, L.A. fashion week ended with a bang on Sunday night where Brand Equity Showroom showcased 100 top looks from Civil Society, Division E, Zanerobe and Buffalo David Bitton at the Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood.

The red carpet was full of young celebrities like Mena Suvari, Ashley Scott (NCIS), Naturi Natughton (FAME), Madeline Zima (Californication), Kayla Ewell (Vampire Diaries), Candace Cameron Burr (Make it or Break it) and Nicholas Gonzalez (Melrose Place).

Also from Melrose was Shaun Sipos who plays David, whom I had the the pleasure of interviewing. He told me that in the rest of the season we’ll see ups and downs with him and Lauren and there is “a question about whether you can forgive someone and live with their faults.” Shaun also revealed a spoiler that the season will end with a storyline about a stolen painting that involves him, Ella and Amanda which will result in one of the three going to jail! In talking about his cast mates, he says that they all get along really well and even though he hasn’t seen them in a while due to his travel schedule, everyone still texts and calls.

After the red carpet it was time for the show! It began with Civil Society, a menswear line that showcased classic menswear with an edgy twist as men wore suiting separates and classically handsome looks. Shaun was most excited to see this line as he says he grew up thinking men should dress in suits daily and has always liked classic styles.

Division-E showed their classic cotton-jersey shirts and dresses that looked effortlessly chic paired with leggings and boots. One of the interesting pairings I noticed was wearing over the knee socks with booties which created a less dramatic version of the over-the-knee boot and is a trend to try in the fall.

Zanerobe featured cute mini dresses for the girls and a lumberjack type look for the boys and all the models carried sports equipment down the runway. Finally, Buffalo David Bitton rounded out the show with lots of black leather and layering and although those leather skirts and jackets are in the back of your closet for now, don’t retire them yet, as you’ll be wearing them next fall.

Apart from watching all the gorgeous clothes go down the runway I was distracted by the Zanerobe model who wore a grey wool toggle coat and a feather headdress. Yet the cheers from the crowd weren’t as much for his outfit, as they were his amazing abs. (Plus, doesn’t he look like a young George Clooney?) Another man distracting me was Shaun as I spotted him across the runway cozying up to former Pussycat Doll dancer, Rachel Sterling. I tried to capture it on the left… but hey, I’m not paparazzi!

Our Take: Luca Luca at Fashion Week

Actress Alison Brie and designer Raul Melgoza

by Sarah

The Valentine’s Day Luca Luca show in Bryant Park offered a breath of fresh air during the fury (and snow flurries) of fashion week. Celebs on hand at the morning event were socialite Tinsley Mortimer, her paramour Constance Maroulis, NYC Real Housewife Kelly Bensimon, and our favorite, Alison Brie, previously of Mad Men and currently of the cult comedy Community.

The collection, which could be described as rock n roll with a ladylike edge, showcased a slew of gorgeous metallic designs and seriously flirty cocktail dresses. Since fans of the line include Halle Berry, the Hilton sisters, and Anne Hathaway,  it’s no surprise that Senior Designer Raul Melgoza doesn’t shy away from a sexy silhouette in a fabulous fabric. For his Fall 2010 collection, Raul served up the glittery goods. (more…)

Fashion Week Fumble

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

By Sarah

Did everyone see Brit-sensation Agyness Deyn fall not once but twice on the runway for Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Haiti Relief Show?

We’re sure Naomi could understand, because it reminds us of when the supermodel herself tumbled in 10 INCH purple platforms during Vivinne Westwood’s Parisian show back in 1993. By the way, we saw her at a party the other night- she still looks GREAT.

In December, Huffington Post ran a pretty brutal slideshow of models falling down. Check it out here. Some of these wipeouts look not-so-pretty painful!

C it Now: The Suma C Collection

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

by Sarah

Tuesday I headed across the bridge and up through town to the Trump Towers. There, I caught a preview of Suma C’s debut line for Spring/Summer as well as a look at her upcoming Fall/Winter collection. I didn’t have time to chat with the designer– just said a quick “hi” to her while I was there, but the clothes– her really gorgeous clothes– speak for themselves. If I had to guess at Suma Chander’s character, I’d say she honors elegance and beauty as much as she honors power and order– specifically in women.

The Indian- born designer actually worked on Wall Street for thirteen years before she gave in and indulged her dream of designing — namely, using  fabrics with the rich textures and embellishments traditionally worn in her native country. Working as a powerful woman in a male-dominated world must have inspired this knock ‘em dead at the board meeting then slay and seduce ‘em after hours collection. Some pieces even feel a little  Jackie O fresh from India, and others feel a little Grace Kelly goes equestrian. From the blazers, to the pant suits, to the dresses, all of them really look like they know what they’re doing. In Suma’s line, power and grace ride side by side. New York City’s definitely a muse– her apartment boasts a huge, open view of the Manhattan and its Hudson River. Watching the water move all day probably serves to inspire all that beautiful movement in her soft dresses, caftans, and blouses, but the towering steel city buildings speak to the success, strength, and independence found in her blazers, jackets, and suits. Essentially, Suma favors clean lines and strong statements while also keeping her hand lightly on the hip of glamour.

We like it, a lot. Below are a few of our favorite pieces from this season and the upcoming Fall/Winter collection. You can own your own piece of the Suma Collection at the end of this month, when it’s available on the designer’s website, as well as at Searle and Albertine.

Fall/Winter. The arm bands feel so powerful.

silvery caftan. F/W.

caftan with the blues. F/W

In person, this screams Jackie O/Equestrian. F/W.

The feathers and the movement of this dress make it to die for. Spring/Summer.

My favorite-- so warm, so cool, so SOFT, goes with everything. From Fall/Winter 2010.

Portland Fashion Week

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

We asked Portland, OR-based Kjersten to check out her city’s fashion week and give us a bit of scoop.

Paris, Milan, New York…Portland? Yes, Portland has a fashion week — and no, it’s not on par with or as influential as the three biggies, but the City of Roses’  Fashion Week, is actually worth knowing about.

My first reaction to the idea of a fashion week devoted to sustainable, eco-friendly designs was not necessarily a positive one.  I mean, I’ve been lusting after some of the fur vests I’ve seen for the fall, and am thrilled with my recent purchase of leather Jimmy Choos.  I was not at all sure that anything sustainable and eco-friendly would also be fashionable, but I was not about to pass up the opportunity to fashion week right here in my backyard of Portland, Oregon.  (For those of you who aren’t familiar with the fashion scene in the Pacific Northwest, it’s dominated by REI, North Face fleeces, backpacks and Nike.)

And guess what? I was impressed.  I have to start with the venue – it’s out on Swan Island, which is generally home to a large truck manufacturer and other things that require huge cranes and big chunks of metal.  To get to the parking area, you pass through Vigor Industrial Shipyards, home to large ships being built.  And you park right next to the water.  It was pretty impressive, like something out of The Departed.

Once inside, it was all about the clothes.  Opening night included a New Zealand line, Icebreaker – the Kiwis didn’t disappoint.  It was mostly active wear, but very cute active wear. I can’t say the designs were that ground breaking, but were cute and wearable, especially for being sustainable.  The Swedish company Gersemi was also part of the opening night show, and started the week off with a bang.  But lest I give the impression that only foreign companies were present, the local designers of the first night – Tony Dimitri and Defyance, both from Portland – were bold, strong, and edgy.  Other treats throughout the week included designs from the students at the Portland Art Institute, Emerging Designers Competition Finale, Lizzie Walker, Portland brands Idom and Amai Unmei, as well as known Portland swimwear manufacturer, Jantzen.  The only criticism I had was that it seemed to me that several of the designers found a signature look and then just showed different versions of that same look – I’d like to see a little more variety, frankly – because if I didn’t like one thing, chances are, I wasn’t thrilled with the whole thing.  And the clothes weren’t geared toward a season – I thought spring clothes were shown in fall?  Okay, that’s two criticisms, whatever.

NARSSS2010DerekLam2

Until there’s New York Beauty Week, us in the hair and makeup world have to piggy-back on fashion week for our latest trend fix. So far this week, Derek Lam gets my vote for most interesting look. The big pinned-up curls are romantic and fun (and pretty easy to recreate – just use a large-barrel curling iron to curl the entire head, then pin up the curls with bobby pins). But the eyes have it with this look – the purple and green remind me of a flirty peacock showing his feathers to lure a mate. Sure, I’d like to look alluring if I did this, but chances are, if I tried to make this work, I may look like I bumped into the wrong girl at a bar and got punched. But what I would try is lining my eyes with green on the bottom and purple on the top, with a subtle gold or nude shadow on my lid. Makeup artist extraordinaire Tom Pecheux used NARS Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil topped with NARS Easy Lover Lip Gloss (new for Spring 2010) for this pretty, punch pout.

Marc JacobsMy WTF moment so far goes to Marc Jacobs and the weirdness there: powdered white faces, penciled-on black brows and top-o’-the-head buns. It’s a little kabuki, a little Renaissance and a little not-gonna-wear-it. If I were going to try to adapt this look, I’d look myself in the mirror and say, Stop. Let’s just chalk this one up to Mr. Jacobs’ theatrics and not try to adapt it for the rest of us.
