Celebrity Beauty Looks at the Emmys

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Overall, I really enjoyed the beauty and fashion from the Emmys. (And I think the recap shows will have to dig deep to find criticisms.) I checked in with some of my favorite celebrity makeup artists to find out what products they used for their clients’ sizzling red carpet looks and here’s what I found out:

Debra Messing, Makeup by Carol Shaw

Carol wanted to create a sexy, modern dark smoky eye and keep the rest of the face pretty simple for Debra, who looked stunning in an asymmetrical red Michael Kors dress. She used all Lorac products (she’s the creator of the line, after all). On the eyes, she used the Red Carpet Reveal shadow palette  (the first shade as highlighter under the brow, the second on the lid and crease and the third on the lid and as liner on the lower lash line). She smudged black eye shadow on the lid, followed by Front of the Line liner and Special Effects lash primer and mascara. Carol created perfectly bronzed and defined cheeks with TANtalizer Baked Bronzer, Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed and Perfectly Lit in Luminous. Lips were simple with a nude lip pencil topped with Breakthrough Performance Lipstick in Nude Scene and Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick in Vintage. To achieve Debra’s tan glow, Carol applied her best-seller, TANtalizer Baked Bronzer.

I love the Big Love actress’s short crop haircut – it allows more focus on her face, which Mai wanted to keep neutral for the awards show so it wouldn’t compete with her fuchsia dress. She used all Mark products. On the eyes, Mai applied Winkstick Hook Up shadow in Glitzy  on the entire lid and layered that with Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Tiki  from her lash line to the crease. Using Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Espresso, she filled in the crease and smudged the Tiki along the lower lash line. She finished the eyes with black plumping mascara. Lips were subtle with Dew Drenched Moisturlicous Lip Color in Skinny Dip  topped by Pro Gloss Lip Plumping Lip Shine in Swell.

Jenna Fischer, Makeup by Vanessa Scali

I think this is one of the best looks The Office actress has ever had on the red carpet. Jenna and Vanessa wanted an easy, sexy look and focused on a bronze smoky eye. Vanessa used Shu Uemura Pressed Eye Shadow in ME Gold #350 from the lash line to the crease and under the lower lashes and topped that with Shu shadow in ME Brown #855. She then lined the eyes with black Shu Painting Liner and added false eyelashes topped with Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara (a new personal fave!). Like the other looks, lips were simple: Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine in Beige 911.

Who were your favorite looks from the Emmys? Any hair, makeup or nails you particularly liked?

Celebrity Emmy Gifting Suites

I’m not even going to try to be tactful or PC here – for giftees, gifting lounges are awesome. People just hand you stuff! Just cuz! On Thursday, I headed to the DPA/Nathalie Dubois-Sissoko gifting lounge at the Peninsula in Beverly Hills in celebration of the Emmys. (Nathalie’s a lovely Frenchwoman who’s been doing lounges for years at all the chicest venues around the world.) Basically, a lot of brands set up their booths (includes everything from travel destinations, beauty products/spas, fashion and so forth) and celebrities pick up the schwag. Honestly, it’s on par with Christmas. Here are a few highlights/products/people from this sweet suite:

Beauty:

-        Nettie Davis: she’s a celebrity manicurist (she currently works on-set at The United States of Tara and is doing nominee Toni Collette’s nails on Saturday); she cleaned up my paws beautifully. Nettie’s adorable, quick and makes her own all-natural soaps and lip glosses too (see nettiedavis.com for more info).

-        Exhale offered complimentary visits to their amazing mind/body spas.

-        Mercedes from Mercedes Perfume shared her absolutely delightful Jus D’amour fragrance, which is now one of my favorites (it has Tahitian vanilla, a little jasmine and sandalwood).

-        Luxury spa Sphatika set up a mini version of their NYC outpost and provided relaxing spa treatments.

-        Floyd’s Barbershop (where many of my male friends go) offered blow-outs for women and shaves for men.

-        Guests also indulged in massages (outside!) from Massage Express therapists.

St. Regis Bora Bora

Travel, Drinks & Other:

-        Nominees received a three-night trip to the St. Regis in Bora Bora and stay at this resort that’s literally built over the water or they could go to the Le Tahaa private island resort.

-        The women who run Swing (a store in Harlem) came out to introduce Angelenos to their store, which sells everything from groovy fashion to unique home décor pieces.

-        And then guests tried cocktails made from Cabana Cachaca. Cachaca is the traditional/most prominent liquor in Brazil. (I had a taste of a cocktail made by the master mixer from Cicada restaurant with cachaca, Elderflower liqueur, basil, tomato and cucumber – it was refreshing and would make an amazing pre-dinner drink (but also worked for me at 11 a.m.).

-        Zengari Imports: they handed out gift bags with décor items and a discount for a custom-made tent. Think Moroccan den for your backyard, not REI for your hike.

Fashion:

-        Dresses from Eva Varro were on display to borrow.

-        For something more intimate, Pull In boxers and panties were given to guests, as was Kumi Kookon silk loungewear that’s made with decadent fabric.

-        And reps from star-favorite Energetix magnet therapy jewelry displayed and gifted pieces from their line, which is designed with magnets for well-being.
