Sweet Comic Relief

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Everyone deserves a little comic relief, and we, personally, are stoked for “Hot Tub Time Machine”... So fun to see John Cusack, Chevy Chase, and Clark Duke from “Clark and Michael” together in it, too….

Stars Get Set for Sundance

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

A look from Bobi

This week, my town here (L.A.) will empty out a bit as folks head north to snowy Park City, Utah, for a little film festival called Sundance. This festival, started in 1978, is still all about the movies, but it’s turned into a scene (for better or for worse). And we all know that a scene requires fabulous fashion and beauty, so some lovely publicity ladies I work with put together a gifting suite for celebrities to get themselves decked out for Sundance. Stars that stopped by the W Hotel‘s ice skating rink to pick up goodies included Malin Ackerman, Stelle Maeve (The Runaways, CSI, Gossip Girl) and Christian Serratos (Twilight and New Moon).

Here are a few highlights of what people picked up:

Too Faced Walk of Shame kit

- Kipling bags, Moods of Norway T-Shirts, Pop Beauty‘s new petal jam lip balm, T-Shirts and dresses from Bobi (I’m obsessed with these T-Shirt fabric dresses that are sexy and stylish but oh-so-comfortable; fans include Hilary Swank, Beyonce, Nicole Richie, Madonna and Lourdes), Too Faced cosmetics’ Walk of Shame kit and Lashlight mascara (it has a flashlight!), KARMA California Brut (single serve sparkling wine–DE-Lish!), nail polish from Np2, Fierce jewelry, Country Life vitamins, cozy wonderful Emu boots and vintage goodies from clothing store What Goes Around Comes Around. So now all the lucky starlets who visited this fantastic gifting lounge are set to rough the chilly temps in Park City, but still look stylish, beautiful and healthy doing so!

Stars Get Ready for the Golden Globes

Monday, January 18th, 2010

It’s good to be a celebrity around award season because of the awesome and amazing gifting lounges where they can pick up all sorts of awesome fashion, beauty and other shwag. And get beautiful for all the events happening. This weekend I popped into a few lounges, along with some celebrities. Here’s your behind-the-scenes look at how the stars get ready for the Golden Globes.

Ashley Greene picks up some goodies.

The Kari Feinstein suite

Who: Molly Sims (tall and lovely), Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth (getting bombarded by young gals with questions), Felicity Huffman, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and Bella’s dad Billly, Kristen Bell, Ali Landry, Vanessa Minnillo and Paris Hilton.

What: Cor Skincare, Jessica Hicks jewelry (Felicity Huffman picked up some stone earrings), Moni Moni handbags (Kristen Bell loved the messenger style), Tacori jewelry, Nail Garden salon, Reebok Easy Tone shoes, Dr. Rey Shapewear (this stuff is amazing – Cameron Diaz wears it all the time), Foot Petals (these will change your life) and Retro Sport apparel (Molly Sims perused vintage sweatshirts to take home).

Beauty Highlight: Having an Infinity Sun spray tan — the tan looks so natural. Believe me, the spray tan is not just for California pageant queens! Infinity even has at-home machines!

Where: at Zune in West Hollywood

The HBO Lounge

Who: I spotted beauty Bridget Moynahan with pal Jane Krakowski checking out the suite; I had my hair done next to the Today Show’s Natalie Morales; Gilles Marini brought his darling daughter into the beauty suite and let her get a manicure.

What: For me, it was all about the beauty lounge, where men could get a shave, and women were treated to manicures, makeup applications and hairstyling. Also, all nominees received a GORGEOUS jewel-encrusted compact that also commemorated L’Oreal receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Beauty Highlight: It was all about L’Oreal. The head hair stylist, Johnny Lavoy, turned my hair from daytime straight to red carpet ooh-la-la ‘do for my gala that night. Johnny’s a hair genius, having worked with tons of models and celebrities and he used plenty of Elnett hairspray to keep my look intact. To get the look, he curled the entire head of hair with a medium-barrel curling iron, then pulled it all to one side and secured it half-up with bobby pins. To preserve the style, he suggested I use dry shampoo and pile the hair into a bun on top of my head to sleep. Days later, I’m still wearing the style! (But it’s a bit more tame/everyday wavy now.)

Where: at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills

My "before" hair

My "after" hair

The InStyle Lounge

L'Oreal Compact for Globe Nominees

Who: Cheryl Hines, young starlets from TV and movies

What: It’s a hard life…sipping champagne, perusing the latest InStyle with Heidi Klum on the cover, noshing on cheese, cupcakes and SmartWater.

Beauty Highlight: Again, L’Oreal stylists did hair and makeup. Brow guru Damone Roberts did brows; guests had manicures by OPI.

How to Give a Golden Globes Acceptance Speech

Monday, January 18th, 2010

by Jeff Bridges.
Last night at our Golden Globes party, when the 60-year-old Bridges, who won for Best Dramatic Actor for his role as Bad Blake in Crazy Heart, spoke of his wife and family, every woman in the room MELTED. We loved Crazy Heart, and we love Jeff Bridges even more now for his huge heart and humility. Congrats, Bad Blake! And Mrs. Jeff Bridges, you are one lucky lady.

Don’t forget to pick up the Crazy Heart soundtrack tomorrow, and watch Ryan Bingham sing the Golden Globe winning themesong “The Weary Kind” here.

Casey Johnson Found Dead

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Casey JohnsonTMZ has reported that Casey Johnson, the Johnson &  Johnson heiress and fiancée of Tila Tequila, has died. Causes are still unknown. I first became familiar with the young party girl when I reported a story on her for W magazine … I got to know about the socialite who was making headlines (usually not for the right reasons) and cavorting around Hollywood with friends like Paris Hilton. The sweet dimple-faced girl had plenty of demons – she spent time in rehab, was charged with burglary and had tumultuous lesbian relationships that were frequent tabloid fodder. (An ex set her hair on fire!)

The 30-year-old leaves behind a daughter, Ava, who she adopted in 2007. Ava has been living with Casey’s mother, Sale, in New York.  Friends were often concerned about the heiress’s lifestyle – saying that she was living in a Grey Gardens-esque squalor in her Hollywood Hills home. Sadly, it’s another wasted life – one of privilege that took a path to destruction…it’s a good reminder to be thankful for what you have and take care of those who are a little lost.

Thoughts : American Music Awards

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

17054945Honestly, we didn’t even think we were going to watch anything but the red carpet for the American Music Awards last night, but we got so excited for Gaga and Rihanna that we found ourselves watching almost the whole dang thing.

A few thoughts as random as the AMAs tend to be…

We finally get what Kate Hudson is doing with A Rod. That is one hunk of man. He’s tall, great skin, great shoulders, great smile. Good catch Kate. HOWEVER, you’ve already got him, you can put your clothes back on now. Honestly that tiny piece of silver chain metal didn’t stand a chance at covering Kate’s chest, even though it was vintage Gianni Versace, the “vintage” didn’t make it classy.

ri amaRihanna‘s performance, unfortunately,  felt a little watered down. Despite what a lot of critics say, I really like her new record, but I think the criticism might be attacking her self esteem– it felt like she wasn’t sure what song to choose, so she opted for a watered down mash or “Hard” and “Wait Your Turn.” In my opinion she should have just done either a full on slow, eerie “Russian Roulette” or a full blown “Hard.” The shaky combination of the singles left everyone a little on the fence. It’s not all Rihanna’s fault– while she doesn’t have the strongest voice in pop, the sound system left much to be desired last night– most people sounded far away and slightly tinny. (more…)

Celebrities and Cocktails and Cute Boys… Oh My!

Meg and Me

Meg and Me

If I get invited to one more party packed with celebrities like Robert de Niro and Colin Firth I’m not going. I don’t know how many more nights I can take sharing the same air with good-looking celebrities draped in designer duds and diamonds. And if you haven’t picked up on my sarcasm by now then I’m never taking you to one of these parties with me! Just kidding! I’m kidding about everything, well, just the sarcasm because I had one of the best nights I’ve ever had in Los Angeles on November 5th at the British Academy of Film & Television Arts’ Annual Britannia Awards. Let me break it down for you:

The night started off with a fabulous reception sponsored by Beefeater 24. I went for the “London 24” it consisted of: refined sugar, lemon juice, Beefeater 24 gin and Perrier-Jouet Champagne! Yummy, yum, yum! As I sipped my cocktail (as sophisticated as one can possibly sip) I took in the stunning scene (I’m not talking about you Meg). Beautiful people aside (now I’m talking about you Meg), the Philippe Starck-like furniture and dim lighting set the perfect ambiance for the night that was about to unfold.party drink

I sat down at table 54 to a beautiful plate of tomato, mozzarella and basil awaiting me. Before I even took a bite I overheard (actually, she was intentionally loud, so I overhead nothing!), regardless, I heard, “We are in California, can’t they at least get decent tomatoes?”   Then the entrée, Chicken Wellington, all I have to say is my table started talking about how bad British food is even when you aren’t in Britain.

Celebrity Interlude: Freida Pinto sitting at dinner, GORGEOUS.  Minnie Driver, very pretty and skinny! Benicio del Toro, no comment. Dev Patel, cute! Not cuter than Freida Pinto, but cute! Oh, I stood in line for the ladies room next to Claire Danes, mmmhmm. Jealous? I thought so. Onto dessert! It was divine!  It was a chocolate sponge cake inside hard chocolate…heaven!

The big show! Celebrity galore! Ok, so at the Britannia Awards, BAFTA is basically honoring actors and filmmakers (there are no surprise winners, the honorees know ahead of time). However, there were lots of celebrity surprises!

Arnold Schwarzenegger presented Kirk Douglas with the Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment.  Comments: Arnold, surprisingly HOT (please don’t judge me, maybe it was his suit or maybe it was the Beefeater Gin, either way, I liked what I saw). Kirk Douglas was adorable and it was amazing to see someone who has evolved with the movie industry.

Ewan McGregor presented Danny Boyle with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Artistic Excellence in Directing. Comments: Ewan, sexy! First thing I looked for was a wedding ring and alas, there was one! Danny, amazing director, I love Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting.

Amy Adams presented Emily Blunt with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. Comments: Amy was adorable and truly seemed honored to give the award to Emily. Emily, she looked very pretty and her man John Krasinski (Jim from The Office) is a lot manlier in person and looked very handsome in his tux.

Tom Ford presented Colin Firth with the BAFTA/LA Volvo Humanitarian Award. Comments: If you love fashion then you love Tom Ford, so this was a particularly big moment for me because never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see Tom Ford (sexiest man ever) standing next to my high school love Mr. Darcy (aka Colin Firth). I love you both. I was so impressed by Firth’s humanitarian efforts for Oxfam International and his tenacity in fighting fair-trade. It was lovely to see someone use their celebrity for good and be awarded for it.

Last, but certainly not least, Ben Stiller presented Robert de Niro with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. Comments: Ben, very funny and very short. Robert, who is also referred to as “Bob” by friends was humble and gave off a sweet vibe – as an Italian I was very excited about this celebrity run-in, I called Papa Salerno first thing the next morning!

All in all, my celebrity filled evening was a success. Next time maybe Tom Ford can be my date. Hey!  A girl can dream right?

Chatting with the Twilight Actors

Friday, November 6th, 2009

I spent the afternoon with cast members from Twilight Saga: New Moon. Although I have seen the movie, I won’t share my thoughts on that just yet. What I will share are some tidbits about the actors.

Courtesy of SummitRobert Pattinson. May as well start with him, right? Here’s the thing about RPatz: if he were any other bloke, you probably wouldn’t think twice about him. But since he plays one of the most romantic characters ever, we think he’s Edward Cullen. So I asked Rob what character traits he shares with his vampire alter-ego: “Stubborness in some ways; and he’s pretty self righteous; I get obsessive and posessive about things too.” (By this he explained that he’s very meticulous and likes to be in control: “I have ideas about how I want to be perceived,” he said. “That’s why I don’t have a publicist — I couldn’t stand it if someone told me what to do.”)

But back to my original point — if he weren’t this Edward Cullen-portraying actor, but worked at Dunkin Donuts and lived with his parents and three ferrets, would people obsess over him? Nope (at least not to this degree). And I’ve always had that perspective — he’s not Eddie C. But let me tell you this people: If Robert Pattinson looks you in the eye while he’s answering your silly question and smiles that broad teeth-revealing smile, you melt. And if you hold that gaze, you feel like you might combust or that your eyes and his eyes will reproduce. You’ll take a full order of Robert with a side of Pattinson. So now I get it — I get the mystique of the guy.

Here are some other things to file away in your Pattinson folder: He drinks Coca Cola — no diet for this trim chap. And when he drinks it, he tilts the bottle, never his head. His eyelashes are miles long. The most romantic thing he’s ever done? “I can’t think of a single romantic thing I’ve ever done. I put a flower in a girl’s locker when i was 14. and she thought it was someone else.” Wesley Snipes in Blade is one of his favorite movie vampires (although it took him a while to pick one). A 90-something-year-old woman recently gushed at him. “The older women say exactly the same thing as 12-year-old girls!” Robert said. New Moon is the Twilight book that he connected to the most. (Me too! But I was in a breakup phase then — was he too? He did say he’s never been heartbroken like Edward was.) He doesn’t think the Twilight series is just for girls — “I’ve watched Titanic and I didn’t think ‘This is a girls’ film.’” He thinks men can be romantic too, “unless you’re a complete idiot of a guy.” He has a movie slated to film next year opposite Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman (HELL-O!). Today he’s wearing a plaid shirt and Dolce & Gabbana leather bomber. He does a lot of boxing in his rare time off. Giant is one of his favorite movies. (Love that.) (more…)

L.A. Fashion Week

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

One of the great things about L.A. Fashion week is the wearability of the clothes. Don’t get me wrong, I love the haute couture and high fashion of Paris, Milan, and New York, but it’s sometimes nice to see clothes coming down the runway that you can see yourself walking out in and doesn’t hurt when the celebs sitting next to you are rocking them too. Last week I saw just that when I attended Oliver Tolentino, the Madison and Divolina Boutique opening and the Division-E Fashion Show.short tolentino

The GEFFEN Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art hosted the Oliver Tolentino show last Thursday. The event began with a cocktail reception that even offered complimentary hair straightening. But what I really fell for were the people from Foot-Petals who put cushioned pads in the sole of my gladiator heels, which was integral in allowing me to run to another show later in the night. Tolentino’s designs were beautiful and opulent as the models strutted down the runway with tight, slicked back buns and gorgeous dresses that offered ruffles, pleats, and embellishments. Many of his dresses had a 1960s influence (I love the Mad Men, Betty Tolentino gownDraper clothes) and looked amazing swinging slightly down the runway. The evening gowns and wedding dresses had full skirts and made me instantly want to buy one and hope that I would later get the perfect party invite to wear it.

I then went to Beverly Hills for the Madison and Divolina boutique openings on Robertson. The clothing was standout and I fell in love with the Elise Øverland quilted, zippered leather mini which would be the cutest rocker addition to my wardrobe. As I walked around the stores I was struck with the overwhelming feeling that I wanted EVERYTHING, in addition to the fabulous dress Mandy Moore MandyMoorewore! The drink of the night was the Perfect Pair (created in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness) and made with Pinky Vodka. Although I consider myself quite the cupcake aficionado, I hadn’t had Crumbs cupcakes until that night which has led me to question my previous Sprinkles devotion. The gift bag was fabulous too, with beauty products like Lights, Camera, Splashes mascara by Tarte, Rescue Beauty Lounge Stormy nail lacquer, Smashbox lip paint, and a cute 50 ml bottle of Pinky vodka.

Fashion week ended for me at Los Angeles Fashion Weekend held at the Sunset Gower Studios. The night began with a cocktail reception held in a studio that looked like someone’s backyard patio, in a Melrose Place sort of Rawway, with cocktails by Marani Spirit and Comisario Tequila. The event showcased designs by T-Vik Swimwear, Urban Republic, Raw, and Division E with wearable, urban collections. What really caught my eyes were the shoes, especially the sexy Report Signature Kane Suede Thigh High boots that Kim Kardashian also owns.  In addition to most of the models rocking Report Signature shoes, Mena Suvari who was seated only a few chairs away, wore the Filmore, an amazing pair of T-strap platforms that we were coveting. Luckily we too didn’t have to wait long to wear some runway designs as the gift bag included a Division E tank (the same one Megan Fox has) and a Raw scarf.

My Current Favorite LA Hot Spot

Monday, October 12th, 2009

L.A.’s a land of ever-changing likes and dislikes, but my latest hot spot obsession is here for a while I think. Cecconi’s, located in West Hollywood, attracts stars and power players like a reality star to a camera (aka moth to a flame).

Courtesy of Amy MurrellAs a transplant from New York, I found the food scene in L.A. a bit disappointing. Places don’t always serve food here – I’m used to being able to get a bite and cocktail whether it’s 4 p.m. or 4 a.m. That’s a rarity in L.A. But then I found Cecconi’s, nestled on the corner of Robertson and Melrose, where I can meet for a business breakfast or have an afternoon snack on Saturday after shopping with a friend. Here’s what I love about the restaurant:

Courtesy of Amy MurrellThe space itself: fresh Mediterranean colors (turquoise and white), al fresco dining (or indoors) and a nice big bar. There is a private dining room available as well. It’s large enough that you don’t have to kill yourself trying to get a reservation, but it’s not like a big beer hall either.

The food: awesome. Due to my crappy gluten allergy, I haven’t tried the wood fired pizzas, but hear they’re tasty. I have had the mushroom risotto, grilled octopus and numerous salads, as well as breakfast – a veggie omelet and fresh-squeezed juice is a delightful way to start the day. You can have a midday or midnight snacks as well.

Who you might see if you go: Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Will Smith, Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria Parker, Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie, Kate Beckinsale, Sienna Miller, Mickey Rourke, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce Knowles and Elton John. They’ve all dined in this beautiful outpost.

Bottom line: If you want a fresh dining experience that includes both the food and the scene, make your next meal in L.A. at Cecconi’s.

See the menus here.
