The Return of Glamour

Amanda Seyfried at the Oscars

Glamour is back. How do we know? Hair Styles? Clothes? Shoes? Well, perhaps they are strong clues, but at the Academy Awards many of the women as they were introduced to give an award or came up to accept one, fetchingly lifted their skirts to come up or down the stairs. It is often little clues like this that let us know that elegance, driven into seeming history by overdone everything in the ’80s and grunge in the ’90s has made a stunning comeback.

Not that the runways have demonstrated this up until recently. Last October’s post-apocalyptic, underwear on the outside, bleached eyebrows and blow torched hair were not fashion, they were art. This season showed a lot more of that elegance. Even Alexander McQueen’s (RIP) looks were stunningly elegant, with his slightly outre touch that will be missed dearly. Galliano for Dior came out with some surprising feminine diaphanous blush colored fabrics, very unlike his usual hard edge looks. Armani and Marc Jacobs for Vuitton were deliciously classic. Hair was mostly soft and did not take away from the clothes, but complemented them. (more…)

Free Spray Tans at Eve Spa

Eva Spa

The sun may be shining in both Los Angeles and New York today, but that doesn’t mean we’re condoning sun-bathing. Luckily, Eve Spa is offering a little help to New Yorkers seeking that sun bronzed look by giving away free St. Tropez leg spray tans. If you plan on bearing more than just your legs, then upgrade to a whole body spray for only $20, which is 60% off the normal purchase price. Also, it’s a great idea to start following @evesalon on twitter as you can be entered into drawings for great giveaways like their most recent that gave free bi-weekly  St. Tropez tans for a whole year (valued at over $1500) to a lucky tweeter. So go get your free legs spray tan and then head to do some shopping for some great shorts and skirts to show off your tan now that spring is finally here!

The Luck of the Irish

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday known for drinking, kissing and pinching… though we could live without that last one. But just because you aren’t Irish doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be celebrating too. Here are my picks to make your St. Pattys just a little bit luckier.

Start the day off right with Not Soap, Radio’s Awash in a Field of Four Leaf Clovers bath and shower bubbles. When you lather up in this emerald colored gel, breathe in the mystic Irish blend scent and be prepared for your day to transform.

Let’s face it, half the fun of a holiday is getting into the day’s theme and although you shouldn’t go all out for work, the silly stuff is best for when you get home. Since they say men need direct instructions as to what women want, slip on this PINK t-shirt and you’ll have no problem getting the message across. Or surprise him with Old Navy men’s boxers featuring four leaf clovers. It’s the perfect silly gift that keeps relationships fun and exciting and is guaranteed to keep him smiling and feeling lucky all day long.

If the look you want is less silly and a little more sexy, then Hanky Panky has got you covered. Although you may get pinched for not wearing green that people can see, these flirty Lace Boyshorts in Capri Green will be sure to get you lots of kisses later.

Sometime the subtle look is best and especially if green really isn’t your best color.  Try a  little teal on your nails with SpaRitiual’s Wicked color, Emerald City, which will add a little spice to your normally demure nails.  Or wear your green on your feet with Havaiana flip flops in Mint Green that will double as the perfect compliment to your swimsuit during the summer months.  If you’re looking for a gift for the home for that chic friend, the best way to give a nod to the holiday is through this modern candle by Trees Soy Candles in Gift. This white candle has a fresh aroma and a little sliver of emerald colored glass to symbolize appreciation and love

Girl, Cover Yourself Up! Top 3 Concealers

Friday, March 5th, 2010

By Sarah

Recently, I spent a relaxing weekend at the mall with two of my favorite people. (Living in NYC, the easily-navigated suburban mall is a nostalgic luxury.) But there was one hiccup in our otherwise restoring girl weekend– while browsing a makeup store, I made the grisly discovery these two gals didn’t have– or even think they needed– a go-to concealer.  Un. Acceptable. After we tested a few, they were kicking themselves. They felt like flawless beauty queens. (And they are, but now they’re even more flawless!) In their honor, here are my TOP 3 CONCEALERS. This shortlist is for all the girls out there who, when they wake up feeling a little busted, find themselves over-doing their powder and foundations instead of a feather-light but effective concealer.  May your dark circles, your gross adult zits, and/or your new weird lines along your the crevice of your nose never see the light of day again– and at the same time, may no one see your makeup!

EXUVIANCE CONCEALER

Meg loves this one. It’s Exuviance’s Multi-Function Concealer. Trust worthy lil guy.  You can pick it up at Glow. Simple, to the point, and works every time.

PIXI ILLUMINATOR

From Pixi, our favorite affordable makeup line which is also avail at Target, and who doesn’t love anything available at Target. This one’s a little different, in a good way. It’s actually a tinted moisturizer with a matching concealer in the top. It’s very portable, very user-friendly. Multi-purpose, acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen (SPF 20), and luminizer. Currently, this Illuminating Tint & Conceal is my fave Pixi product. Also, stay tuned for a Blush/Pixi Beauty giveaway this month, by the way.

BENEFIT ERASE PASTE

Benefit Erase Paste. A great go to. Like the Pixi product, it’s also an illuminator. Let me clear one thing up–  most people say, “um, I dont want my zits ILLUMINATED,” and no, no one wants their dark circles spotlighted like they’re on Broadway,  but somehow these awesome products do the opposite. They brighten you up — like you had 3 extra hours of sleep– while concealing your issue-spots. Erase Paste is a fun product to play with, it comes with a little spoon-like device that can get in those trickier areas (although, a great concealer brush is prolly better).

That’s it! I hope this helped! Do yourselves a favor and cover up!

Pre-Oscar Beauty Lounge

The poolside cabanas

Last night I popped over to the Regent Beverly Wilshire (of Pretty Woman fame) for an evening of beauty, pre-Oscar pampering and champagne, natch. I headed out to the pool cabanas, Moet in hand, to learn about the brands that are available at the hotel spa and salon. First I met with Lea Journo, the famed celebrity hairstylist, to check out her product line. (Actress Anna Kendrick was also there scoping the fabulous products. The hair mask is to die for!) Then it was on to meet makeup artist Christopher Drummond, who has a line of mineral makeup products (they are titanium dioxide and zinc free) and 100% synthetic brushes. (He found out that he was allergic to animal hair brushes, so made ones that don’t aggravate the skin.)  Then I popped next door to the Kate Somerville cabana to learn about her new book – she’s a celebrity skincare guru, so I’m excited to check it out. Next was DayNa Decker fragrance. Yum Yum and Yum. The candles have wooden wicks, which I love because they crackle like a fireplace and I like the wide flame they create. Last but not last was a whirl with NuFace – this is a device that you smooth over your face; it sends positive and negative charges to the muscle, which keeps it active and gives the appearance of a lift. I don’t think I need to splurge on the device (yet), but I did notice a bit of lift around my eyebrows. Finally, I indulged in a chair massage—so glorious. Then I met a lovely friend at The Blvd for a glass of wine and to soak up the buzz that’s filling the town in anticipation of the Oscars.

Tats What She Said

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

I don’t know if Coco would be rolling in her grave or if she’d love the uniqueness of the new Chanel temporary tattoos. These tats debuted at the Spring-Summer 2010 ready-to-wear runway show in Paris and were created by Peter Philips, the creative director of Chanel makeup. Personally, I think they’re great – I don’t have any tattoos myself (too permanent for moi!), but love the temporary rub-on tattoos that have the interlinked CCs, pearls, chains, blossoms and swallows – I used to wear a Chanel necklace like this and love the look of the brand’s symbols flowing down the model’s arm, like they would a necklace down the chest. The tattoos are also much more affordable than said jewelry – for $75, you get a package of five sheets that includes a total of 55 designs.  The designs, which were applied to models’ necks and wrists like jewelry, can be purchased here; but hurry, this is a limited edition item. The directions for application are simple and just like you do for any temporary tattoo: place on the skin, apply a damp cloth, let it set and voila! You’re a tattooed lady. Check them out on the newly redesigned Chanel.com and let me know what you think – worth it?

Oh la la La Prairie!

Friday, February 19th, 2010

I had always heard that La Prairie skincare products were amazing, but it wasn’t until I made a little trip to the La Prairie spa at the Beverly Hills Hotel for a facial that I could truly, for myself, say their skincare products are amazing. Plus, the spa is frequented by many celebrities (I’m sworn to secrecy, sorry!), so go even if it is just for the eye candy.
After experiencing the White Caviar Facial (aka: the best facial of my life—my skin literally glowed in the dark) created to mimic the new White Caviar Illuminating Système I had to know more. This new collection consists of 3 luxe products designed to control pigmentation (age spots/discoloration) for a firmer, brighter and younger-looking complexion.

Ah, Suki Suki

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

by Sarah

Just recently, I discovered the evolutionary skincare  Suki. As my friends know, when I find a line or product I love, I am a total pusher. And so now, I’m pushing Suki on you. Because…. it’s one of those skin care lines that is just honestly trying to make the world a better place, while making your face a better face. Really.

Totally appealing to my hippy-dippy side, the creator, Suki Kramer, consults with cosmetic chemists  in addition to traditional herbalists, and her line makes 100% pure, organic products with the purest of ingredients and environmentally responsible packaging.

You know when you get a really good hair cut, and it suddenly seems like your hair looks the way it was always supposed to look, and so then you pity the old you with the old hair and don’t know how you ever walked around looking like that? That’s how I felt when I tried this line. I couldn’t understand how I hadn’t used these products before.

Toner

After using the concentrated balancing toner, my skin feels clean, refreshed, and I feel relaxed, even optimistic. Financially, it’s  as I can get to a spa -feeling these days. This citrusy spray toner is now one of the rituals I look forward to the most in my skin care routine. Maybe I’m just lazy, but I always got so bored by the idea of using toner, although now I realize I was missing out. A couple of sprays of this in the morning and you’re a new woman.

exfoliant

I wasn’t big on exfoliating either (again, lazy), but now exfoliating is another divine indulgence. The exfoliate foaming cleanser feels just like rubbing fresh lemon peels and crushed sugar all over my face– it’s that refreshing. It sloughs off dead skin, accelerates collagen turnover to prevent early signs of aging, and it uses organic chamomile extract which is a natural anti-inflammatory, sedative healer. My skin definitely looks younger since I started using it.  I also tried a few more products (the day lotion, the sensitive cleansing bar) and they were all gentle, refreshing, and effective. OK, that’s enough pushing for one night — I just love this line.Trust me, Suki doesn’t suk.

Gaga for MAC’s New Lipsticks

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I love Lady Gaga…Everything from her crazy fashions to her music that plays on repeat on my iTunes before a night out. So imagine my excitement when I found out that MAC is bringing a little gaga to my life with their new Viva Glam Gaga lipstick in that perfect nude pink shade. But if 80s favorite Cyndi Lauper is a little more your style, then try the new Viva Glam Cyndi lipstick for the perfect 80s revival.  These new lipsticks are part of the “From Our Lips” campaign which donates 100% of the selling cost from Gaga and Cyndi to the MAC AIDS Fund.

MAC Cosmetics started their AIDS fund in 1994 to support men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally. So far, the fund has raised over $150 million in 67 different countries through the exclusive sale of VIVA GLAM Lipstick and Lipglass. So be one of the girls who just wants to have fun AND support an awesome cause.

V-Day Treats for the Girls

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

If the abundance of heart shaped candy in the grocery store and the excess number of Victoria Secret ads haven’t tipped you off, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Unfortunately, the day that’s a celebration of love can easily turn into one of frustration either with your significant other or because you don’t have one. Instead of unnecessary stress, use the day as an excuse to shower a little much needed love on yourself and your girlfriends.

1. This recession can put a damper on travel plans, but it doesn’t mean you still can’t run away…. Even if it’s only to your shower. Treat yourself to a LaLicious Scrub and Butter set in transporting scents like Coconut Cream, Lily Mango, Passionfruit Lime, Island Guava and Tahitian Flower. Enter the code Vday25 at check out for 25% off and get ready to feel the island breeze (now if only the cabana boy were included.)

2. Have a friend who just can’t get over her ex? Help her let go of those feelings once and for all with Lush’s Ex factor Bath Bomb. This little blue gingerbread man will fizzle your bath and go down the drain, just like all remaining thoughts of the relationship should!

3. One thing you can be happy about is that you don’t have a boyfriend who’s “gift” to you is too-tight lingerie. Instead, give a little sex appeal to yourself and your girlfriends with a Hanky Panky Thong wrapped like a long stem rose. Flattering, comfortable and sexy, this is a must have for all the women in your life.

4. Rather than wasting calories on a heart shaped box of so-so chocolate, try Jane Iredale’s ChocohoLICKs. These adorable lip balms come wrapped in those little paper cups just like their calorie laden alternative, so feel free to treat yourself to Truffle, Carmel, Strawberry Cream, and Chocolate Orange. Extra bonus… the experts say food is the way to a man’s heart…

5. One of the most relaxing ways to end a long day is a bubble bath, so try Not Soap, Radio’s Bath and Shower Bubbles in The Stuff that Cupid Dips His Arrows In. You’ll love the ginseng and passion scent, and it even has pheromone activation, so get ready, soon even that pizza delivery boy will want to be making it dinner for two.
