Our Favorite Random Grammy Facts

The Grammys are on tonight (CBS, 8 p.m. E.T.) and in their honor, we rounded up our favorite rando facts about music’s biggest night.

In 1989, the first Grammy for a Rap Performance went to DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) in 1989. However, only Jazzy Jeff showed up to collect — Will Smith stayed home to protest that the award announcement wasn’t televised.

In that same year, 1989, Milli Vanilli were revealed as a lip-synching scam, and the duo became the first artists to have to give back their Grammy.

In 1997, when she won Best New Artist at 14 years old, LeAnn Rimes was the youngest nominee to win a big-category Grammy.

In 2006, our girl Kelly Clarkson was the first American Idol to win a Grammy. Kelly won 2 awards– one or Best Pop Album and another for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Since You Been Gone.”

Sinead O’Connor
remains the only artist to deny her own Grammy award. She did so in 1990 for her performance album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, and she did not want that Grammy, people!

Kanye is hardly the first guy to walk into someone else’s speech– in 2004, Fifty Cent wandered in the background while Amy Lee (of Evanescence) accepted her award for Best New Artist – an award he was up for. When asked about the incident, the rapper said; “I feel like I got jerked at the Grammys because I’m aggressive,” said the aggressive rapper. “I don’t understand how (Evanescence) get best new artist. I will never go back to the Grammy Awards ever in my career.”"

Even weirder/ruder?

When, in 1998, Shawn Colvin was giving her acceptance speech, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who had lost out to Puff Daddy earlier in the night, got up onstage to protest. A stunned Shawn watched on as ODB rambled, and in closing he capped off his speech with “Wu Tang is for the children!” Nope.

In 2000, Jennifer Lopez made everyone gasp when she showed up on the arm of P. Diddy  in her sheer, cuttothere v-neck Versace gown (which had to be held up with tape). Ten years later? We bet no one would even bat an eye!
