The 2010 Oscar nominations were announced this morning by Anne Hathaway and the Academy president. There weren’t too many surprises, but here are a few things I’d like to call out:
Actor in a Leading Role: I’m glad to see Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker in there; this relative unknown was very convincing in his role as a soldier in Iraq. Will he beat Jeff Bridges? No; and neither will Clooney, Firth or Freeman.
Actress in a Leading Role: No huge surprises here, but I can’t fathom that the Academy will give it to Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side. Call me a snob who thinks there is a bit more depth out there…But I am probably naive and she’ll thank Jesse James yet again. Or will Gabourey Sidibe nab it for Precious? Or Meryl? I’d love to see Carey Mulligan, but I know she’s the underdog.
Actress in a Supporting Role: Almost every interview Jeff Bridges has done has mentioned how great Maggie Gyllenhaal is in Crazy Heart; well Jeff, the Academy heard and gave her a nom. I mean, she’s no Mo’Nique, who’ll win, but it’s nice to have Maggie nominated.
Best Picture: The nominees are Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air. Oh yah, there are 10 nominees this year. What do you think about this — having 10? Seems like a lot to me. I was ok with the five nomination system, but whatevs. I am glad to see A Serious Man, An Education and Up in there, which probably wouldn’t have made the five list…And I liked Avatar, but best picture? Nah, not in my book.
And one final thought: no writing nod for Nora Ephron for Julie & Julia? Um, ya, I need my money back Academy.

Im sorry, but I thought Maggie Gylls stunk up Crazy Heart!
I think boring Maggie G stinks up a lot of movies…
I cant wait to go watch the new alice in wonderland movie 2010 when it comes out. I first heard about it being remade about a year ago and I was so excited and once I saw who the actors and actresses were going to be I was very happy. I think that
