I’m in what I can only describe as a fall boot conundrum. When you’re living in New York City, and it’s mid October, and you’re not made of money, what should be a very exciting fashion moment– the choosing of fall boots– turns daunting and frustrating fast. Here’s the thing, I’m too short for over the knee boots– I would look ridiculous in them. So those are eliminated. But I definitely want boots up to my knee. Because I’m short, I prefer a heel (on nearly every pair of shoes I wear, and I prefer that heel to start around 4 inches!). Living in NYC, I can’t walk around all day long in a heel- I’ll ruin the shoes, and my feet! Practically speaking, a heel must be reserved for night. This leaves a need for: a tall leather fall boot to walk around in (I’m not caught dead in my Uggs unless it’s a morning walk with my dog), and a tall leather boot to hit the town in at night. Also, you can’t forget a cute rain boot, NYC will pour on you without a moment’s notice.
Because I’m not rolling in dough (my recent move from the west coast to the east really didn’t help financial matters) I’m going to have to break my purchases down via splurge or save– I usually do this by finding the look I’d die for no matter the price, then finding its closest, more practical sister.
Let’s do this!
- Dream Fall Tall Boot: The Saratoga Slouch Flat Boots with Studs (I’m a sucker for studs) seen above. Retails for $898. Definitely out of my price range, but a girl can dream.
Also freaking me out: the Alexander Wang Kim Tall Boot with pebbled leather that are half cowgirl, half rockstar. Yum. But, they’ll set me back $770 bucks. I need that to eat, peeps.
The more realistic choice for the tall Flat boot is Frye’s Melissa Boot-- it’s classic and timeless, meaning it will save you next fall, and the fall after that. At $298, it’s reasonable for a very wearable boot. (I also love Dolce Vita’s “Envy” boot, which is just under $200).
On to rain boots, which are simply a necessity.
Dreamy rain boots: Dolce & Gabbana Quilted Rain Boots with Buckle
- These boots will set you back 700 bones, so if you actually do buy them, chances are you’re gonna be praying it rains everyday til spring, just to make up for your hefty investment (And that’s no way to live).
Something a little more practical, but still will put a spring in your step in a downpour? The Nomad Hurricane Rain Boot in red, so you’ll feel fierce when the weather is moody and damp. Just $39.95!
Now onto my favorite boot: the hit the town boot with heel. That’s where small fries like me get a big boost.
- The dream would be the Loeffler Randall Camilla Platform Boot on a Wood Heel. The height — 4 inches of wooden heel– may be a lot for some, is perfect for me. It’s glossy, glam, and a whole lot of rock n’ roll. It’s also more than half my rent ($850) and is completely out of the question. Still, it’s nice to know it’s out there. I’ll sleep better at night knowing that one day when I hit the big time, Loeffler Randall will be my go-to for shoes. (And anyone’s wesbite that blasts Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty is a winner in our hearts based on musical affinity alone).
The more practical decision and the one I’ve decided on? My old stand by, Dolce Vita has come through for me once more. I cannot get enough of their heels and sandals, so it only makes sense I would love their boots too. DV has made the Fiona High Heel Boot (she comes in at 4.25 inches!) they’re made of rich buttery leather and they’re hot as hell and ON SALE for $199.95. I love them! Thanks for fall boot shopping with me- with a little patience and a lot of looking, it’s totally feasible!
