Cheers! We Eat and Drink Kahlua

Jeff and Me

Jeff and Me

When I’m invited to an event sponsored by an alcohol company it takes me about 2.4 seconds to accept. The reason for this is two-fold: 1) Alcohol companies always throw a good party. And 2) I like free drinks. So when an invite from Kahlua arrived, I replied within 2.2 seconds. (I was apparently extra-excited/zippy.)

Kahlua Horchata

Kahlua Horchata

My buddy Jeff and trekked to Loteria in Hollywood (we walked there from Jeff’s – passing the cross-dressers and tourists on Hollywood Boulevard along the way). Loteria is a Mexican restaurant that started as a kiosk in the famed Farmer’s Market on Fairfax and then Chef Jimmy Shaw expanded to this full-size joint on the boulevard. We were greeted with horchata and Kahlua cocktails as well as taquitos, guac and empanadas.  So far, so good.

Chef Shaw developed a menu for the night where each dish has the coffee-flavored liquor in it. Here’s what we ate:

Queso Flameado

Queso Flameado

Queso flameado: this is a plate of melted cheese (aka love) accompanied with a shot of Kahlua, which the waiter lit on fire for a fun little flambé action.

Ensalada: there was all sorts of yumminess in here – dates, monchego cheese and a Kahlua-tinged vinaigrette.

The main was a choice between chicken or pork with a Kahlua mole sauce, with rice and beans on the side.

Churros

Churros

And dessert: churros that you dipped in a Kahlua hot chocolate.

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was served (and drunk) throughout the meal. Right, right I couldn’t eat everything (bad gluten, bad!), but what I did have was absolutely outstanding. And it reignited my taste for Kahlua. Here’s a recipe I know my mother would enjoy.

The Curious Russian
1 part Kahlúa Coffee Cream
1 part Kahlúa Coffee Liqueur
1 part ABSOLUT Vanilia
Lightly shake and strain over ice in a rocks glass. Vanilla bean garnish.

I just realized I post a lot about cocktails. Cheers!

candy corn

I think it’s safe to say that the Treats are usually the best part of Halloween. But I’m not a huge candy eater, so I prefer a more adult treat, in the form of a festive cocktail. Here are a few bevies to try this holiday!

As I’ve previously covered, I love Skinny Water. Here’s an orange-colored drink that’s only 133 calories.

2 oz Orange Cranberry Tangerine Skinny Water

1 oz Diet Ginger Ale

Candy Corn

Shake the vodka and Skinny Water over ice; strain in to a martini glass, top with ginger ale and garnish.

Morgan Harrington, Missing Girl

Morgan's Missing Flier

Morgan's Missing Flier

Last Saturday, October 17th, a 20 year old girl named Morgan Harrington went missing in my hometown of  Charlottesville, Virginia. Morgan, who has blond hair, blue eyes, and is 5’6 and about 120 lbs, was last seen at a Metallica Show at the John Paul Jones Arena. She was wearing a black Pantera t shirt, a black miniskirt, black tights, and black knee high boots.

For some reason, around 8:45, before Metallica even started playing, she went outside the stadium- to use the bathroom or smoke a cigarette– reports differ– and because she didn’t have her ticket stub she was refused re-entry. She then called her friends with whom she went to the show and said she would find another way home. That doesn’t really add up– it was before the concert that her mother (with whom she is very close) described her as “very excited about,” and, because she is a student at Virginia Tech, located 2.5 hours away in Blacksburg, Va, random rides home probably weren’t going to be that easy to find.

Police found her purse and her cell phone in the parking lot, but no other clues about where Morgan went.  Obviously Police and her parents suspect foul play. As her father said on the news, “kids at that age believe that everyone is their friend.” The more time that goes by, the bleaker the outcome seems. Metallica has upped the reward money to $150k, and have posted a message on their website, hoping anyone at the show who saw anything at all will come forth– one really never knows how the smallest detail could solve a mystery.  Morgan’s story has been featured on Nancy Grace, the Today Show, and even the normally celeb-drivel focused site Perez Hilton. Here is the tip line: 434.352.3467,  here is the  tips email bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov , here is the Facebook community dedicated to finding her, and here is the website set up by her parents.  It’s always horrifying when someone is abducted or goes missing, and of course because this happened in my safe little hometown, it makes me feel that much more accountable to try to put the word out there. Because the people or person who took her is still out there, and Charlottesville has always felt like a safe community, it’s especially rattling. Unfortunately, crimes like this truly can happen anywhere, at anytime, and to any of us. Always keep your eyes out for your friends, and please play it safe this Halloween. Our thoughts are certainly with her parents, as we can only imagine every minute that they don’t have their little girl back home with them is a living nightmare. More photos of Morgan are below, and here is an updated time line regarding her whereabouts last Saturday, the 17th .

Girls Night In

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

One of my favorite ways to unwind after a long week is to go bar-hopping with my girls at some of our fabulous places that L.A. has to offer… but NOT when we have a lot to talk about. When there is mucho gossip and life updates to be discussed at length, loud bars are not our friend and we opt in favor of a girls night in.

xbox-360-lips-swarovskiAfter a few glasses of wine, and some yummy appetizers we can be a crowd that is hard to quiet down. As our discussions wind down, we often end up turning our iPod speakers up and singing and dancing around my living room, (yes, like we did when we were 15… some things never change.) But technology has changed, and so should we, so on our next girls night, we are excited to introduce our friends to Xbox 360 and Lips: Number One Hits. What could be better than singing into microphones accented by Swarovski crystals and having a full on dance party with your girls? One little warning? Tell your neighbors not to be alarmed when they hear a bunch of adults belting Lady Gaga and Rihanna… and we bet they will want to join in on the fun too.

Vacation for a Cause

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Everyone deserves a little getaway once in a while, and when it is for a good cause then it could reasonably be said to be a gift to others as much as it is to you… right?

Why We Love the End of Summer

Summer has come and gone, and while it’s always sad to say bye-bye to those long, warm days, there are more than a few reasons I’m excited to welcome back fall with open arms:

TV season premieres

OK, maybe this shouldn’t be the first thing on my list, but I am psyched for this fall’s TV lineup. Clear some room on your DVR for awesome dramas like Gossip Girl, Melrose Place, and The Beautiful Life. And of course there are the returns of always-hilarious faves like Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Amazing End-of-Summer Sales
Take advantage of the seriously slashed prices on summer shorts, sandals, and swimwear. Even though your focus may be on shopping for cozy layers, now is the best time to do swimsuit shopping; check out BlueBee.com’s killer sale.

Stress-less Beauty Routine
Fall is the season of low-maintenance beauty. I’m no longer worried about the mirror-like shine on my face, unsightly sweat stains, funky tan lines or humidity-ravaged hair. And the itchy dry skin of winter is still months away. Mix up your beauty routine by incorporating one new fall trend into your look everyday.

Fall Festivities
Throw an apple picking party or attend an Oktoberfest in your area. If football is your thing, get your gang together for a Sunday afternoon tailgate party.

Desserts: My Love Affair

Friday, September 11th, 2009

So it’s been established that I have a little bit of a sweet tooth.  I really do have a passion for all things food (especially dessert) –  and it doesn’t help that I am about to marry a chef.  I am known as the “lunch-dessert” queen and find that I instill this deeply rooted craving onto my friends, family and colleagues.  Whether its cookies in my desk, ice cream after dinner or a stop for some chocolate after my lunch break, not a day goes by that I don’t indulge in something sugary.  And, surprise! Never had a cavity!

To kick off my first post and honor my passion for dessert, I have decided to list my favorite eight desserts of all time (and by all time, I mean my life).  They range from the widely available to geographically undesirable – but they all have one thing in common.  Deliciousness.  I imagine picking my absolute favorite would be like choosing a favorite child – so these are in no particular order.

Growing up, it was Thrifty’s – but the change to Rite Aid hasn’t changed the fantastic creaminess and crunch of Thrifty’s Chocolate Malted Crunch at Rite Aid.  Yes, it’s ice cream from a drug store, but you would never know it from the taste.  When I was little, my dad would always take me for a scoop and it cost about $.39.  Even though it’s over a dollar now, it’s still the best deal around.  Now that they sell it by the gallon, my freezer is never without it.

ScreenHunter_06 Sep. 11 11.34I may live in the city now, but I am a San Fernando Valley girl at heart (whether I like to admit it or not).  Unfortunately the valley has only recently tried to tap into the world of good food and good fun for adults.  The Rack in Los Angeles opened up a few years ago and finally valley-ites had a place to eat, drink and be merry.  The #1 reason I go: Cinnamon Apple & Walnut Bread Pudding.  Pour a little of the maple bourbon cream over the top and you will be sure to believe there is heaven on earth.   Like totally, for sure.

I like to think that watching the Food Network all these years makes me a bonafide chef.  Ok, so I may not be an expert cook, but I must credit one of the best I have made to the lovely Giada De Laurentiis.  Her Blueberry and Mascarpone Turnovers are pretty simple to make and are the perfect blend of fruity and rich.  You can make a batch to impress your friends – or you can save them all for yourself.

I used to always ask my mom make butterscotch pudding from the box.  I would have listed that as one of my favorites, but I was blessed with a recent experience at Pizzeria Mozza in L.A. that changed everything.  The Butterscotch Budino is sinfully delectable.  Served with two rosemary cookies, a dollop of fresh whipped cream and sprinkled with sea salt, the creamy and sweet pudding is perfectly balanced by the salty topping.  Mario Batali – you are my hero.

2005_10_cornerbakery-thumbWhile I love chocolate, when it comes to cookies I am a sugar cookie girl.  Luckily, there is a Corner Bakery near the office so I can indulge in their soft and chewy Sugar Cookies on almost a weekly basis.  The habit has gotten so bad that my colleagues grab me one when they are nearby because they know how happy it makes me.  The Surgeon General should consider putting a warning label on them – they are highly addictive.

I didn’t attend UCSB (I was a Trojan – Fight On!), but my cousin did.  One time before we went out for a night of trouble making she ordered regular pizza and dessert pizza from this little place called WoodStock. O. M. G.  CinnaBread, how you haunt my dreams!  It’s wonderful pizza bread covered in cinnamon & butter gooiness with a light sugar frosting that melted from each piece.  From then on, whenever I went to Santa Barbara, I forced my cousin to take me there.  It’s been a while since I have had it, but I will never forget it.

When Sex and the City made Magnolia Bakery cupcakes in N.Y.C. famous, I was determined to try it (and clearly I wasn’t the only one).  The cupcakes were pretty darn good – BUT nothing compared to their Banana Pudding.  Their layers of banana, wafers and pudding don’t seem groundbreaking when I explain it, but I licked the container clean – it was THAT good.  Thank goodness they have opened up more locations since SATC!

ScreenHunter_05 Sep. 11 11.31While I do love all desserts, ice cream (and all variations of) is my absolute favorite.  If I am craving a malt (that’s a malt, not a milkshake!) I go to Baskin Robbins for a Mint Chip Malt.  I don’t ever ever EVER want to know the fat and calorie content of their malts – ignorance is truly bliss.

kim1

Kim

Kimberly knows a thing or two about food (her fiancé is a chef, after all): Her sushi likings are very specific and she’s always game for a meal out, followed by dessert (every time). Two of her best attributes are her sense of humor and hair, which looks equally great curly or when she expertly blows it out.

melissa

Melissa

If you ever want to talk movies, Melissa is your girl. (Currently she’s watching AFI’s top 100 movies list!) Like many of us in the office, she enjoys happy hour, discovering new restaurants and riding her bike along Venice beach. And especially for a designer, she has incredible grammatical skills!

Taryn

Taryn

Taryn always has a fun story about online dating or some cool fashion/beauty insider tid-bit. Plus, she’s very well-traveled (she was born in South Africa!) and constantly makes me jealous with her travel agendas. Today, in fact, she’s off for a jaunt in Italy!

dan

Dan

Dan recently shared some of his homemade jalapeno-infused tequila and it was damn good. Aside from being a drink-master, he can school anyone in volleyball and has a keen eye for real estate with some genuinely savvy investment tips.

Sarah

Sarah

Sarah is our resident music expert and a very witty girl, to the point that her phrases should be coined. She could also teach TMZ a thing or two on breaking news – I’m not sure how (nor do I dare ask), but Sarah always knows celebrity news before anyone else.

Guest Bloggers! I’m excited. We’ll have celebrities, makeup artists and hairstylists to the stars, chefs, nutritionists, relationship experts, athletes and more. It’s gonna be good!

Meg

Meg

And finally, yours truly, who loves to smile and laugh, so I seek out things that make me do just that (travel, friends, food, odd people). I’m also a trivia buff and swear that if it weren’t for the brain cells killed by champagne, I would be some sort of quiz show maven. Anyway, this blog will be fun, informative and worth checking out frequently, so please do so and talk to us too – we love to hear feedback!

Until next time, M.
