Do You Adapt to Change or Resist it?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

by Dr. Christina Grant

We know things need to change, in our own lives and out in the world. You can ask almost anyone what needs to change in life and they will have answers. Ideas and opinions of what needs to change are as varied and diverse as the people offering them.

When the idea for change comes from within ourselves, we usually like it. It is inspiring. But when change comes in as an independent with a mind of its own, it can seem like a rebellious teenager. Just when we think things are calm it sulks around, keeps us awake at night, and makes us want to gain greater control.

Wise souls among us know that change is all we can truly depend on. We can’t escape it, though we try, and in many cases we must let it be. Mostly we try to avoid change because we have no idea what is in the future and we really don’t want to alter our world view. We decide it is best to keep things as they are, or how they used to be. Plus, we don’t want to experience the feelings of loss that often accompany change. What if we terribly miss what we had?

The idea of change, and change itself, brings up unnecessary fear which then causes unwarranted stress on the body and mind. I believe one of our tasks as human beings is to overcome fear, especially the useless fears that pervade our modern lives. I see fear restricting the body, mind, and spirit, shrinking one’s life experience into an uncomfortable little box. It takes our minds to dark narrow places where we lose a broader, more balanced perspective. (more…)

Healthy Raw Pecan Pie Recipe

Monday, April 26th, 2010

by Kimberly Snyder

Pecan pie always conjures up memories of being made and given with love. There is something very nurturing, and loving, about pecan pie!

Crust:

  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 2 cups Pitted Dates
  • 1 cup coconut flakes, finely ground

Pit the dates yourself, extracting each pit and discarding them. Add the dates, coconut flakes and walnuts to your food processor and mix on high until thoroughly mixed.

Press the mixture into the bottom and sides of a pie tray. Set to the side.

Filling:

  • ½ cup unrefined coconut oil
  • 1 cup raw pecans, soaked about 15 minutes
  • 1 cup organic Thompson raisins
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp. Celtic sea salt

Blend all ingredients together in the blender until smooth. Pour onto the crust of the tray, and garnish with fresh, raw pecans.

Set in freezer overnight, or for at least 5 hours before serving. Slice up and share with loved ones!

Champagne is Healthier Than I Thought! YIPPEE!

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

It’s no secret that I’m a champagne-aholic. It’s m’drink. And now I love it even more. A study from the University of Reading in England shows that two glasses of champagne a day are good for the heart. That’s right. My bubbly is HEALTHY! The champers contains nitric oxide, which can help decrease blood pressure (no wonder I like it after a loooong day) and diminish the chance of cardiovascular disease or stroke (no wonder I haven’t had a stroke). PLUS, champers only has 75 calories per glass, which is less than an apple and means that I can drink more (just go with my logic).

Ok and ready for ONE MORE bonus? Since it’s Earth Day and all…Pommery POP champagne has just unveiled its latest eco-friendly bevy: the POP Earth NV Champagne ($55). The company practices sustainable wine growing, managing/limiting waste and minimizing water and energy consumption. All of this helps for a greener future and healthier land. And guess what? This brew is DE-LISH – it’s definitely not too sweet (so those who turn up their noses at the sweetness of champagne, this one is crisp and refreshing and now my mouth is watering).

So I can sip knowing that I’m not getting too fat from my drink, my heart is happy, my stress level is decreased and the earth is smiling with me. CHEERS, SALUT, SKOL TO THAT!

Earth Day: Just Lip Service?

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

by Dr. Christina Grant

Ten years ago I lived temporarily in a suburb of Boston that didn’t recycle their trash. Coming from coastal California, my mind could not comprehend that everyone in the community threw noxious junk into a pile without attempting to recycle it. This was 30 years after the advent of Earth Day when we all began learning about the detrimental effects of pollution on our planet.

Now 40 years have passed since April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day. Since then, air, water, and land pollution has steadily increased. New illnesses have cropped up in our bodies.

Recently the Marine Mammal Center in Marin County reported that many more mammals than usual are turning up sick. Twice as many sea lions, elephant seals, and harbor seals are being treated for illness than last year. Officials tell us that sea lions are indicators of the health of the ocean. They don’t know why so many sea lions are found without their mothers, malnourished, tangled in fishing lines, or affected in some way by marine trash. But the situation has worsened.

In a separate report this month, researchers warned of “the great Atlantic garbage patch,” made of harmful swirling plastic debris in the ocean. It is a global problem as our throw-away culture continues to use products that don’t break down and end up in waterways. It is estimated over 100,000 marine mammals could die trash-related deaths each year.

For 40 years, millions of people and school children have been taught about the necessity to preserve our environment, yet pollution and disregard of the planet has increased. What does this say about us? About our priorities? Or, about our intelligence?

It says we allow companies to market harmful goods to us and we buy them. It says the influence of advertisement is more powerful than common sense. It says we value convenience and high profit, no matter the means to get it. It tells us that most human beings have little respect for the earth, a disregard for the sanctity of nature, and a lack of concern for the health and wellness of other living creatures.

Yet, the most conscientious among us would find it nearly impossible to have no negative impact on the environment. There is the ubiquitous use of plastics we can’t seem to avoid, to say nothing about the trash we generate. Still, the health of the planet and ourselves depends on each of us. There are a few primary things we can easily do.

The first step is basic: get control of your trash. At the end of the week there should be very little in your trash bin. Your recycle bin should hold the majority: paper, boxes, plastics, cans, and bottles. Secure your bins so debris doesn’t end up in the streets.

When you travel, visit a park, get on a boat or an airplane, manage your trash. Take it with you or don’t create any. If you live in an area that doesn’t recycle, begin complaining loudly to your town officials.

Rethink grocery shopping. Purchase food that isn’t prepackaged. You can get meat, fish, and chicken wrapped in paper. This way you avoid the polystyrene (Styrofoam) plates most meats come on. Polystyrene leaches toxic chemicals into your food and beverages, affecting your health.

To manufacture polystyrene creates hazardous waste and affects the health of those exposed. It is made with non-sustainable petroleum, harms the ozone layer, and is dumped or blown into our streets and waterways as litter where living creatures ingest it and die. Polystyrene is not accepted by most recycling agencies. It is not necessary. Avoid everything that touches it.

If you buy six-packs of cans held together by plastic, cut or tear apart the plastic. Never take one of these onto a boat or leave one lying around. They end up in the streets and the earth’s waters where they suffocate birds and sea animals.

All plastic containers are polluters. Yogurt, for example, can be bought in a large container and put into smaller reusable containers. You can replace myriad products for cleaning windows, countertops, and floors with vinegar and water. With a little research you’ll discover many ways to use vinegar (and baking soda) for most of your household cleaning, including clogged drains.

Recycle plastic bottles and tubes that hold your personal care products. Bring your own cup for the daily coffee or tea. Take water from home in a sustainable, non-plastic water bottle. Bring lunch or eat where take-out packaging is compostable or recyclable. Use only compostable doggy clean-up bags. Be mindful of plastic toy purchases for both people and animals.

There is irony from my soapbox today. In the midst of writing this, UPS delivered a gift from my sister who lives in Chicago. I opened the box to find a sea of polystyrene pieces. This is the dilemma we find ourselves in. How to live in this modern world we created and also protect, preserve, and heal it.

I’ll take that box and its nasty polystyrene to a shipping store where they will reuse it. Meanwhile, it’s almost Earth Day 2010. I’ll cut back on plastic in every way possible and reduce my trash, now and throughout the year. What will you do?

12 More Natural Solutions to Alleviate Stress

Friday, April 16th, 2010

by Christina Grant

Stress is the intensity of how you believe you can cope with an identified threat. It isn’t your actual ability to cope, but your perception of your ability to cope. Stress becomes a problem when you think you can’t cope well with a perceived threat.

Mild stress can be used to inspire you, build motivation, and encourage you to press forward in spite of obstacles. Some stress is needed for energy, courage, and triumph; to win, such as in sports events and games. It can help a mother lift a car off her child or assist an emergency room nurse to do her job speedily and accurately. Another kind of stress is the big malady of our day. It builds up over time due to worry and fear and leads to physical and emotional disease.

The goal is to manage your response to the bombardment of stressors in daily life. You cannot avoid the stressors, but you can cope with them differently by altering your perception of them. One way to begin is to heal your nervous system so it isn’t on high alert. Instead, it can be in a state of balance and calm that is easily returned to after surprising news or a particularly stressful time. (more…)

An Easy, Healthy, Delicious Dessert Recipe

Monday, April 12th, 2010

by Kim Snyder

Kim’s Key Lime Pie Bars

Benefits:
This dessert is fat-burning because one of its main ingredients is coconut oil, which contains Lauric Acid. Overall, coconut oil stimulates the thyroid, increases your metabolism and helps you burn stored body fat!

The other way this recipe helps you burn fat is with the high content of lime. Like lemon, lime has over 200 enzymes and helps restore liver tissue. The liver is our main fat-burning organ, so with this recipe we are also giving it a boost.

This recipe is low-glycemic, so does NOT spike your blood sugar the way refined sugar will.

Recipe:

1 cup organic lime juice
½ cup unrefined coconut oil
½ cup raw agave nectar
½ tsp. Celtic sea salt
4 cups cashews
½ – ¾ cup water

Combine all ingredients in a blender except for the water, and blend on high. Add the water last and as needed to keep the blending going and make the mixture smooth.

Freeze at least 4 hours, or overnight. Cut into bars and serve! Makes about 15 full-portion sized bars. Can store in the freezer and keep for a few weeks.

A Damn Good Idea

Monday, April 12th, 2010

How many times have you woken up from a night out with your feet on FIRE from hobbling in heels all night? A friend tipped off to Damn Heels and ever since, we’ve kept them tucked in our purses for nights on the town– they compact into a tiny, portable little ball. Come midnight, while our friends are taking mini breaks to cool their heels on the sidewalk, we’re bouncing along in the comfy little ballerina style black slippers. While heels are always a good idea at the start of the night, we always end up cursing those 4 inches of pain. Do yourselves a favor! At 20 bucks a pop, they’re cheaper than a trip to a podiatrist, and way easier than begging your boyfriend for morning-after foot rubs.

100 pairs of heels, but we go One Day Without Shoes

Remember how glorious it felt to run around barefoot as a child? The feel of cool sand between your toes, the refreshing sensation of dewy grass underfoot… it was all so liberating. That is until a rock or splinter decided to ruin all the fun.

Now, imagine one day your shoe closet is empty, your house made of scrap metal and the ground outside littered with rocks, debris and just waiting to spread disease. Picture your disappointment as your child is turned away from school because you cant afford simple footwear. This is the reality for millions of men, women and children around the world. Here at ShoeFabulous we are in the business of keeping the stylish among us well heeled, but also well informed about how they can improve the world around them.  So the girls and I participated with TOMS shoes in an event called One Day Without Shoes.

What is that you may ask? Well TOMS asked people from around the world to skip the shoe closet on April 8th 2010, and go about their normal business barefoot, to help bring awareness to the plight of millions. On the One Day Without Shoes website you can watch as some kids try to skateboard barefoot, another man makes his entire family do chores barefoot, and business bankers hold meetings sans Ferragamos.  At ShoeFabulous we sacrificed our pedicures, and in one case our nylons, as we went a whole day  “nu-pieds.” And we made a video to prove it!

Check out the video here…
