How To Choose The Right Swim Suit Top For Your Body Type

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Finding the right swimwear separates can be extremely hard and discouraging. I’m sure many of you have had this trouble throughout your life as I have. Finding the right kind of swim suit for your body type is a total mission, but thinking about it before shopping can help. I know this from experience; I am a swim suit connoisseur. My swim wear collection rivals my shoe collection if you can believe that. I’ve worked in retail with thousands of suits, own just about every style and know that there is a perfect swim suit for every occasion and every body type. Yes, there is a difference between beach bikinis and resort bikinis in swimwear style.  Buying a swim suit should be an invigorating experience, not a horrible one. Self confidence is key and there is a swim suit fit for EVERY woman out there, you just need to know what will look best on you.

For better support (yup I’m talking about the twins) you’ll want to choose something that isn’t so skimpy. This will make your shoulders look less broad and provide the support for your bust that you need. Mind you, this means that choosing a teeny string bikini won’t work in this case.  The ideal swimwear tops for this are halters, built in underwire bra tops, or molded bra top. Any straps that don’t tie around your neck are also a good choice, so you aren’t putting any strain on your spine or neck.   One of the tops I love for this summer season that’s perfect for support is Betsey Johnson’s Hello Cupcake Underwire Top. It’s sexy, chic and will have the men drooling on the beach.

For someone that needs a little something extra in the top to enhance the bust there are many options available. Lucky for you, you can choose something with less fabric, because you don’t have weights pulling you down. Adding a top with a little padding can do wonders. If you really want to add some glam, spice up that top with embellishments. Beach Bunny’s Class Act from their Goddess collection is perfect for anyone wanting to accent the bust. I’m completely obsessed with the razorback bikinis that are uber hot right now. Bandeau tops are also a great and can be adorably sexy and are very much in style. Patterned triangle tops are also a great choice. My favorite right now is Luli Fama’s Bars Teeny Bikini in lime green.  On a smaller bust, this bikini will catch attention and flatter the figure. (Bar Rafeali wore it in Sports Illustrated this year)

To hide the tummy, on the contrary to many beliefs there’s a ton of gorgeous swim suits to flatter your figure. A one piece swim suit happens to be one of my favorite types to wear and they are magical. If you’re self conscious about showing off the tummy, a tankini or one piece is great and helps to keep it held in.  With rouching and ruffles, there’s something flattering for any size. Magic suit is known to get you looking like you’re 4 sizes smaller in their swim suits and is definitely well worth the price and are super cute. This one piece plunge by Magic Suit (left) is sexy and comfortable for any day at the pool. A one piece swim suit is stylish, a great fit and fabulous. Flattening the tummy can be as easy as a tankini and who says you can’t look great in them either? Tommy Bahama’s 2010 summer line is also a great choice for the season.  If you’re going for a sexier one piece, check out Kenneth Cole’s plunge monokini for a sexed up style.

There are hundreds of ways to go with a swim suit. Think about what colors look great with your skin tone and color, what kind of support you need and the most important part; don’t get down on yourself when you’re shopping. Bring a friend with a positive attitude to ensure that you aren’t shopping with any Debbie downers. Let the sales person help you. They’re experienced with matching suits to body types so take advantage. You’re going to look fab in your new swim suit top; all you need is a little extra support. ;)

Where is the Care in Conventional Health Care?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Dr. Christina Grant

My entire orientation to health and wellbeing is from a holistic perspective so it astounds me to see the majority of our population allowing themselves to be “treated” by a system run by insurance companies and pharmaceutical giants. These industry giants dictate scientific study and treatments geared toward the ultimate goal of selling us something, not healing us.

Our system of medicine is excellent in emergencies and immediate life-saving procedures. If there is an emergency, I want conventionally-trained doctors on my case. However, beyond emergencies, there is nothing done to heal the whole person or address the root cause of an ailment. We are separated into little parts, our humanity cast aside. The incredible power and influence of the mind, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions to make us sick, and help us heal, is ignored.

When we arrive at a hospital or doctor’s office we are most often viewed as a file folder, an insurance card, and someone who needs to be dealt with as fast as possible because there are just too many other important things to do, like get on to the next patient (i.e. bring in more money), make sure to avoid being sued for malpractice, and bill insurance. My New Product Love Affair

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Check it out: FIX, a line from the skincare clinic in Malibu of the same name, has a new product line and one of the standouts is the Wish Wash powder exfoliant cleanser. I. Am. Loving. It. Here’s why: I need a cleanser that washes away my makeup and gets my pores clean; I don’t need something that will be harsh on my super-sensitive skin and make it feel red and irritated.  After using this cleanser at night, I felt like the day’s impurities were gone and my skin was left looking brighter and glowing. It also has Walteria Indica, which helps to fade brown spots and inhibits melanogenesis (further brown spots from developing). I also love the  Immaculate Complexion serum and not just because it refers to Madonna. It’s thick and luscious—someone who has dry skin like me will love this product. Do a trial on your hand, you’ll see an immediate difference in how your skin looks. I did my own little experiment on half of my face and I was shocked at how good the serum side looked–immediately radiant and smooth! The line is paraben free and can be bought at fixmalibu.com.

What To Do About Death

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Dr. Christina Grant

We don’t get much training in dying, being with the dying, or what to say to those who have just lost someone very close to them. The subject is generally feared and met with much resistance. We often hear the standard line, “I’m so sorry,” while people languish in their discomfort.

I am interested in how we can approach the subject of death with more reverence and respect. How can we treat it with the sacredness it deserves, rather than something terrible to quickly move beyond?

I’ll not forget the time I spent in the hospital with my dying friend whose body was being ravaged by a rare blood cancer. I sat on her bed, listened to her concerns and life stories, and did myriad tasks at her request. Just before she passed her cousin came to say hello. The cousin stood about 6’ away, purse over shoulder, arms crossed in front of her chest. She had brought her husband and they both had the same look on their faces – a look that said, “Good God, get me outta here.” They scrammed after about seven minutes. This as well as other encounters I witnessed during that time revealed much about how uncomfortable we are with death and dying. (more…)

Joe Jonas picking up Dearfoams Slippers

Yesterday was a busy one—first I stopped by the Montage in Beverly Hills for the Kari Feinstein gifting suite to celebrate the MTV Movie Awards. Nicky Hilton stopped by Infinity Sun (me too!) to pick up some products, including their amazing self tanner. (Her sister Paris actually has the spray tan machine at home!) I toured around at the same time as Joe Jonas, who was very appreciative of each goody he was gifted. Other brands represented were Montage Hotel, Cesar Canine Cuisine, V-Moda, Super Dry, Infinity Sun, Dearfoams, Capella Pedregal, Mitchell & Ness, Retro Sport, Paleta, Britax, Zico, Vivitar, Sweet Lucie’s Ice Cream, The One Group, Nature Babycare, Dr. Loretta Skincare, Yogen Fruz, dekkori, Jewels by Park Lane, Isagenix, Kamal Letterpress, Nail Garden, Preferred Group Inc., All Star Travel, Vivitar, Happy Joy Sticks, Tres Glam, Sedona Rouge Hotel and much more.

Next stop: Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills for a La Mer event. (I’m a La Mer addict, btw.) Keri Selig and Oceana Board Chair Keith Addis hosted the event. Oceana’s mission is to protect the world’s oceans, so they partnered with La Mer (who is donating proceeds) and created the limited edition blue Crème de la Mer to celebrate World Oceans Day.

Then I cruised over to West Hollywood to the SLS Hotel for another gifting lounge, where I heard about Mesoesoteric skincare, which has drinkable collagen(!) and picked up some adorable doggy socks for my cat and some Body Shop products (for my mom, who loves Body Shop!), including their new deodorant.

Then I met friends at Animal restaurant on Fairfax for a VERY filling meal and some sparkling pinot noir, which is now my newest obsession.

A Chat with Get Him to the Greek’s Rose Byrne

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Yesterday morning I got to have my morning coffee over the phone with the sweet and witty Australian actress Rose Byrne. When I lived in LA I’d seen her out and about in Los Feliz—she’s petite and impossibly slender, with porcelain skin and wide brown doe eyes. In other words, she’s ridiculously beautiful. Sometimes, just as Hollywood itself does, I assume beautiful people can’t be terribly funny or unselfconscious either. Starting today, with the release of the Judd Apatow production Get Him to the Greek, Rose proves me all wrong. Before starring as the narcissistic and gleefully raunchy Jackie Q, girlfriend of Aldous Snow (a return to Russell Brand’s character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall), the actress was known for her more somber, quieter roles. Some films of note were Troy, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones, Wicker Park, and one of my personal favorites, I Capture the Castle. Of course she’s made the biggest impression as Ellen Parsons opposite Glenn Close on Damages, a show she’s “very proud of,” she notes. But while that courtroom drama’s taking a perhaps permanent recess, the actress is happily letting her hair down, and she more than holds her own opposite comedy kings Russell and Jonah Hill.  Rose describes Jackie as “the female version of Aldous,” and if you’ll recall, he’s a drug addled, larger than life, sex-obsessed narcissist.

We talk a little about dating musicians in real life—she never has, and I tell her she can skip it. Dating Aldous in the film will suffice and she admits Jackie would be “quite a handful to date herself.”  I asked her how hard it was to keep a straight face around Jonah and Russell as they adlibbed during scenes, and she tells me that “some days were easier than others.” Her first day, as luck would have it, was the hardest. “I showed up to set to shoot the “Baby Jesus” video and Russell was swaddled in a manger and I was dressed like Mary Magdalene, so that was hard,” she laughs.” Another video shoot, though, for “African Child,” (which isn’t in the film but will be on the DVD) was a more stressful situation and Rose found it easy to keep a straight face, as it was a boiling hot day, and the diminutive star was wearing nothing but a “tiny monokini and ridiculously tall stilettos.” Rose says her experience as Jackie has earned her newfound respect for real pop stars. “There’s no comedy in a Lady Gaga or Britney Spears video,” she said. “And it’s hard work, the pop star process—from writing to singing to recording.” While she had sung casually before landing the role, for the film she had a voice teacher and was in and out of the studio.

Rose also says, of her first big budget comedy with the potential to rival the success of last summer’s comedy hit The Hangover, that she’s got a new perspective on the genre. While she wanted to do comedy for a while and has done some in her native Australia as well as “little ones” in England, snagging Jackie Q marks her American comedic entrance, and she doesn’t want to stop anytime soon. Next week the 30-year-old actress begins filming a currently untitled Kristen Wiig project, also under the Judd Apatow umbrella. Rose says she’s honored to be working with Judd again but “totally geeked out” to be working with Kristen Wiig, whom Rose loves from SNL.”I can’t wait,” she says. And neither can we. Until then, get thee to the Greek!!

The Oil and The Animals: The Latest Pics from the Gulf

This is beyond heartbreaking. A few weeks after the devastating spill, the animals are now perishing. The anguish we feel for the wildlife affected by the Oil Spill is eating away at us all. But REMEMBER you can help here by texting “wildlife” to 20222.
