After that cold snap we had last week here in Manhattan, I started to get into an autumn frame of mind—right in time for the weather to turn ridiculously hot again.  So maybe I can’t put on a cozy sweater and get out my boots and tights just yet, but I’ll definitely be able to satisfy my fall craving by starting to wear darker nail polish.

Hong Kong is OPI‘s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, but I think it’s totally still wearable for cooler months.  Even the pastels and corals could be appropriate as we head into jacket season, because their grey undertones keep them from having too much of a bright, sunny floral vibe.  I’m already wearing Jade Is the New Black, and I’m absolutely in love with it; I’m not afraid to be adventurous with my nails, and I love a good green.  Bling Dynasty and Chop-sticking to My Story are the next Hong Kong polishes I want to try, and I think they’ll go great with the camel clothing trend we’re all hearing so much about for fall.

The average boyfriend probably doesn’t know a great deal about fashion, but  Mycelebrityfashion.co.uk decided to poll a group of men on their girlfriends’ style.  When asked what trends make a woman look “promiscuous,” many of the guys’ responses were things that lots of women consider key pieces of a wardrobe!

The list of clothing items these men claimed make a women look like she’s “purposefully showing off her figure” was quite long, but there were a few standouts: the boys named the bodycon dress (with the Herve Leger bandage dress as the prime example) as the top offender, and mini skirts and stiletto heels were also rated highly.

No woman should let anyone else’s judgmental opinion stop her from wearing something she loves—but admittedly, if they aren’t styled well, some of these pieces can overshoot sexy and end up looking sleazy.  Read on for some examples of celebrities who know how to wear these hot items, and how they manage to wear them the right way.

First, let’s talk about the bodycon dress.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing something that hugs your shape in all the right places, and if you have the confidence to do it, good for you!  Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian and Hilary Duff all know that, and they each look great in bodycon dresses.  Gwyneth keeps hers from being too look-at-me sexy by opting for a longer length and demure neckline; and Kim keeps her va-va-voom figure clothed with class by wearing bodycon in black, instead of a brighter color that might scream for attention.  Hilary even manages to make the infamous Herve Leger dress sugary sweet instead of sex-kitten: the key to her look is that she’s chosen the dress in a fun mint color that says ‘girl next door,’ not ‘girl in the back room.’

Next, let’s take a look at some mini skirts.  Jennifer Aniston and Rihanna are both big fans of minis, and they both know how to wear them well without being over-baring.  Jen shows off her legs with sophistication by balancing her short hemline with a high waist and a cute bow; and Rihanna succeeds at making her mini less provocative by sporting a circle skirt style and pairing it with a button-down shirt and sweet pearl necklace.

Finally, let’s find some celebrities who know the right way to strut in their stilettos.  Few women in Hollywood don’t wear spiky mile high footwear, but Jennifer Lopez, Drew Barrymore, and Mila Kunis are some of the best in the business when it comes to really, really high heels.  Jennifer keeps hers from getting too serious by wearing them in a gorgeous and unexpected color, and Drew shows that you don’t have to flaunt a ton of leg to make stilettos look great.  Mila’s addition of stilettos to her casual look might be a little impractical for the stroll in the park she’s taking, but there’s no denying she looks flawless.

Maybe Mycelebrityfashion.co.uk should question those boyfriends again, using these ladies as examples.  They’d probably get different results!

The new television show Melissa and Joey just aired its first episode last week. With it, we are brought back to the 90s when Melissa Joan Hart starred as Clarissa in Clarissa Explains it All and Joey Lawrence in Blossom as Joey Russo. When thinking of the 90s I can’t help but think about bowl cuts on boy band members, the waif look on models such as Kate Moss, and the obsession with Doc Martens.

This fall, television isn’t the only place bringing back stars from the 90s. The fashion scene is bringing back some old favorites such as the jean jacket, clogs, flannel shirts, florals, and even mini backpacks.  Although these items used to provide that comfortable look, now with the perfect accessories, they can add some glamour to your fall wardrobe.

A major material used in the 90s was denim – wide legged jeans, jean skirts, jean vests, and jean jackets. Denim is making a comeback this season. However, jeans today aren’t what they used to be. Simple with a grunge look, denim used to bring a casual look. This fall the 90s jean jacket is making a comeback in the form of the denim button-down shirt. Turn away from the hipster look by adding some ruffles on a nice skirt and a long chic necklace.

The obvious choice when you needed to slip something on, this season they can still be used as the go-to shoe to give your feet a little rest from those pink strappy heels. Today’s clogs come in a new silhouette, making them a little more elegant with a short heel. Dress them up even more with a chic dress and tights. Still not a platform heel, these clogs add a little ruggedness to any outfit.

Flannel shirts accentuated that disheveled look just perfectly. Worn big and even buttoned in the wrong holes, these shirts were downright sloppy. This season bring that warmth and your favorite plaids to your wardrobe with this new flannel shirt that is shorter and fitted to the body. Tuck the flannel into a tight pair of skinny jeans with a thick buckle belt, long chain necklace, and this season’s hiking boots with a three or four inch heel.

Aside from the knee length dresses, this year has brought v-neck floral dresses that go as far down as the ankle, best worn with flats.

Those days when Clueless’ Cher used to go around with a bear mini backpack may not have returned but an alteration of that fad is back. The mini backpack has returned with a classier look to it, coming in leather. Match this backpack with laidback trousers or a light dress, tights, and chunky boots.

Fashion travels in a circle with trends being recycled over and over. Using old ideas but adding new elements, we create chic pieces that don’t look outdated. Like any designer, you can create this look yourself. Take a peek in the back of your closet and see what old pieces you can make new again.

I don’t own real pajamas. Typically, I just sleep in a t-shirt (which makes the logistics of venturing out of the bedroom a little difficult if I’m staying as an overnight guest in someone else’s home).  I think it may be time to invest in actual sleepwear, so I’ve started doing some research.

A good, gradual step forward into full-on sleepwear would be Aerie by American Eagle Boyfriend Boxers or Girly Boxers.  They’d do the job of getting me clothed on bottom for bedtime, but they don’t have matching tops, so I’d have to hold on to my t-shirts.  I wish Aerie had pajama sets, because they’ve come up with some really irresistible patterns, especially on the Elephant Boyfriend Boxer and the Polka Dot Girly Boxer.

I’m going to skip the lace-trimmed slips and teddies at Victoria’s Secret because (a) I’m not interested in turning up my sex appeal for when I just want to pass out and go to bed; and (b) they have some great casual pajamas built for comfort.  I really like the Fireside Long Jane Pajama (available in ten different patterns), but thermal long john jammies aren’t necessarily a look I can see myself pulling off.  The Tee-jama (also available in ten different patterns) looks comfortable, but I think I want something a little more fun and pajamaish, like The Dreamer Flannel Pajama (available in twenty-four different patterns!).

don’t have a huge selection of sleepwear right now, and no sets at all.  The one item I found that I’m really loving, though, is the Sparkle and Fade Knit Ruffle Short.  I can easily see myself pairing it with a camisole or t-shirt and looking super cute for sleepy time.

If I ever feel the need to splurge on some designer pajamas, I’ll head over to Neiman Marcus for the Oscar de la Renta Heirloom PJs.  These look so crisp and luxurious, I’ll probably need to make a major bedding threadcount upgrade to give them the sleep environment they truly deserve.

Usually, I’d rather buy more actual clothing than spend money on fancy PJs—but now that I’ve seen how stylishly sweet my dreams could be, I’m changing my mind!

When you have curly hair, summer is one long humidity-sponsored frizzfest.  Even with the best products, summer weather often just won’t let you have a good curly hair day.

For girls that don’t have curls, a bad hair day can be hidden or even completely turned around by a ponytail; but I think I speak for a lot of curly girls when I say I can’t pull that off.  When I put my hair in what should be a ponytail, it looks more like there’s a pony afro exploding out of the back of my head.  There’s just too much poof going on for it to look cute.

For years, I’ve dabbled in other updos, but now I’ve finally found one I can commit to.  Ladies (both straight and curly), I give you the topknot: my new go-to pulled back hairstyle, good for bad hair days, lazy hair days, “I overslept” hair days, and especially frizzy summer hair days.

A topknot is super chic on anyone, and super easy to put together.  My technique is to pull my hair into a very high ponytail at or close to the top of my head, fasten it with a hair tie, and then wrap the tail around the tie to create a tight bun.  To secure it, I first tuck the end of the ponytail under the hair tie, then stick in some bobby pins to keep everything in place and to make it stand up higher.

As you can see, the basic topknot technique can be modified to produce a number of looks.  I usually let mine be a little less perfect—the slightly undone topknot is a less severe look, and better for casual everyday wear.  When I want to look more polished, I’ll wrap the bun more tightly; and if I’m having a day where I’m feeling particularly adventurous and think I have enough hair savvy, I might add a tiny braid.

One brilliant, brand new topknot is brought to us by the lovely Ms. Hilary Duff.  In these pictures from the Teen Choice Awards, we see Hilary’s hair french braided loosely on top to give her an amazing textured pompadour, and the rest of her hair pulled into a purposefully disheveled topknot.  If you look closely, you can see that the braid continues back into the knot.

Hilary’s unique topknot style is a little bit complicated, but it’s such an innovative and gorgeous look that it’s worth spending the time to put together.  I’m still working on perfecting mine, but as soon as it’s ready you can be sure I’ll be wearing it often!

Summer is meant to be a relaxing time but we constantly find ourselves on the go trying to enjoy every minute in the sun. With these fun in the sun activities usually come some wrong nutritional choices such as ice cream, hot dogs, and well, who can resist a little coconut with their rum? Here are some snack ideas when you’re on the go that have that summer feel, are accessible and have fewer calories.

Mister Softee is not a Beach Bum

Who doesn’t love spending a relaxing afternoon at the beach? But after a few hours tanning or taking a dip in the water, a little snack to cool you off starts lingering in the back of your mind. The ice cream stand on the boardwalk may be tempting but those extra calories are not what a girl wants when the only thing between her and her confidence are two thin pieces of cloth.

Frozen yogurt is by far the closest snack to ice cream but with less calories and fat, it’s definitely the better option. Unlike ice cream, frozen yogurt is mostly carbohydrates, fueling your muscles instead of being stored as fat. The biggest problem people make with yogurt is the portion size. One ounce is 30 calories, so if you eat more than 4 or 5 ounces, the calories will add up.

For something a little less rich but will cool you off just the same, ice pops are a good alternative. All carbohydrates and no fat, this low calorie snack is only 15-25 calories per ounce with 4 grams of sugar per serving.

Another option, fresh fruit smoothies, have the most nutritional value, filling your fruit quota for the day. However, make sure the smoothie you order is made with a water, nonfat milk, or real fruit juice base liquid. Many restaurants use ice cream milk that makes the smoothie sweeter but adds the fat calories you are trying to avoid.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame but I’ll skip the Peanuts

Baseball is considered America’s number one pastime and looking at the food options they sell, I can see a correlation between the latter and America’s obesity epidemic. Healthy options are hard to find but with a little bit of effort you can avoid those Nathan’s hot dogs and cracker jacks.

In light of baseball’s spirit and tradition, fill your peanut craving with trail mix. Choose a mix with whole grain cereal or pretzels and dried fruit such as pineapple or raisins. This way you’ll get a serving of unsaturated fat, carbs, and fruit.

Another option, baked chips, has about half the calories as regular chips. Baked have 130 calories per serving with only 15 of those calories from fat while fried has 230 calories with 130 of those calories from fat.

The healthiest option and a summertime favorite is watermelon. Most definitely found at a little league game, it may be harder to find at a MLB stadium. (A cup of fruit salad may be easier to find.) The fruit has no fat, fulfills your fruit quota, and its large water content creates a satisfying full feeling.

Warm weather activities seem to give us an excuse to consume alcohol; happy hour on the bar’s roof is an absolute must. Instead of grabbing for that pina colada or cocktail that can have as many as 260 calories per 4.5 fl. oz, substitute it for some of these other light drinks just perfect for summer.

Substitute your rum with vodka and finish it off with some low calorie tonic water. For that sweet taste, go with fruity flavors such as watermelon or raspberry.

A summer favorite is, of course, Bud Light. A light beer and only 95 calories, it’s a great choice for happy hour or a barbeque. It’s refreshing, light, and as one of America’s favorites, it’s a staple in most bars.

For a heavier beer with a summer taste, go with Sam Adam’s Summer Ale. The ale is 150 calories per bottle and a summer treat since it is only served in the summer months at the pub.

Summer brings that carefree feeling and with it, temptation feels harder to resist. Take the time to make smart decisions. Your body will be thanking you when it comes time to strut your stuff in a leotard and cat ears.

Sad because you think the end of summer means you have to retire some of your favorite outfits?  It doesn’t have to!  Layering fall cardigans over light dresses and trading sandals for a pair of boots are both great ways to carry your wardrobe into cooler months, but the transition pieces I’m most looking forward to are some cute tights.

UO Opaque Tights

Styling tights into an outfit is probably easiest when they’re opaque. Basic opaque black tights are always sleek and stylish, but don’t be afraid to try out other colors, too—there might be less sunshine, but that’s no reason you can’t keep things bright with your legwear! In terms of quality and durability, I usually favor opaque tights by DKNY or UO Opaque Tights from Urban Outfitters.  If you’re looking for the most economical way to stock up on these staples, turn to Target: right now, Xhilaration tights are just $5 a pair, in colors from classic black to gorgeously rich electric blue.

Tights with patterns might be a little trickier to incorporate into a look, but they’re so much fun it’s worth it!  When I’m picking up my opaque tights from Urban Outfitters, I usually find they have some bold patterned options I can’t resist trying (and their tights are consistently 2 for $20, so it’s a smart move to pick up a second pair!).

Let’s start out easy, with Urban Outfitters‘ Royal Stripe Tights.  Vertical stripes aren’t too busy, and they’re an unexpected tights option that still keeps things fairly simple.  If you want a similar but more subdued look, try Urban’s Cabaret Tight—the striped effect comes from alternating sheer and opaque black panels.

Want to kick things up a few notches?  Check out Urban’s Pinstripe Floral Tight, legwear that’s sexy with a hint of sweet.  These will definitely get some attention, and if that’s what you’re aiming for, keep the rest of your outfit plain and let your tights be the eye-popping focus.  If you’re feeling more eclectic, dare to wear these with clothing that’s patterned as well—just remember, pattern mixing often works best when the motifs are different.  For example, you’ll likely find the most success pairing these tights with a floral dress: the floral elements in the tights will help to tie things together, but with the pinstripes the dominant theme, your pattern mixing won’t look too matchy-matchy.

Want to go for tights more on the light and fun than sexy side?  Consider the UO Heart Tights! Like the Pinstripe Floral Tight, these could work with both solid color or carefully styled patterned outfits, but they’re definitely more cheeky and whimsical.  Lighthearted tights like these get you in on the patterned tights trend, but they’ll be more of a cute pop to your outfit than a look-at-these-legs focal point.

One brand new tights trend I hope you won’t try is nude pantyhose!  Believe it or not, Britain’s Daily Express reports this old-fashioned, mundane, ill-advised hosiery has found its way into high-fashion wardrobes like Beyonce‘s and Sarah Jessica Parker‘s.  These stars are opting for flesh-colored tights to give off the illusion of perfect legs, but really, is it worth it?  More obvious tights are much more fun, plus if your legs look bare when the weather turns cold, everyone will just think you’re underdressed!  So for once, don’t follow these lovely ladies’ lead, and start your search for spectacular tights that are meant to be seen!

How did I get so lucky to attend the world premiere of Eat Pray Love in NYC? Let’s get straight to the miraculous point: I brushed shoulders with Julia Roberts last night, a serious OMG moment. She’s luminous. Her body and hair, perfect. Her wardrobe, elegant and classic. She wore a black Stella McCartney jacket and black, short Diane Von Furstenberg
shorts and gold Coomi bangles.

Before that, the night was off to a shaky start because my dear friend Kelley, who held my ticket in, was caught in a brutal battle with NYC traffic. So for a while I loitered around the Ziegfeld Theater in the heat and humidity, all dressed up with a place to go but no way in. Then Elizabeth Gilbert, the book’s author and film’s reason d’etre,  emerged in a long ruffled floral frock looking red carpet ready and all  smiles. As much as I tried to keep my excitement in check, that was the moment the night kicked into high gear. Then my ravishing date finally arrived and the night was ready to get started!

The movie itself is wonderful– fans of the book will feel indulged. Naturally, some things have changed with its screen adaptation, but I felt they stayed true to Liz Gilbert‘s emotions– from feeling depleted and lost to gaining control of her life and feeling blissfully happy. The male supporting performances by Billy Crudup, James Franco, Javier Bardem, and Richard Jenkins are all incredible.

But enough about the cast. All I can think about after this movie is Italian food. If I could drop everything and go to Italy tomorrow to become a professional pasta and pizza eater I would happily say arrivederci.

After the movie we walked to the Metropolitan Club on 60th St and 5th Avenue for the  celebratory afterparty. Flower pedals everywhere, mountains of pasta and desert, and a quickly moving open bar. We scoped the scene and went into a back room with tables reserved for Roberts, Bardem, Murphy, Jenkins, etc etc. We saw Javier Bardem at his table eating pasta. He is absolutely stunning and watching him eat for a moment was heavenly. In real life, he’s all that more amazing. We kept exploring and stopped dead in our tracks at the sight of Eddie Vedder, who penned a song for the film. Kelley and I found a corner to talk by a grand staircase and I looked up to see Julia Roberts and her husband, Danny Moder. Again, radiant perfection. That’s when our shoulder brush happened. She mingled in the main room and ordered a drink from a very delighted bartender before making her way to her table. There were tons of Food Network personalities in the room and we saw Gail Simmons which all seemed very appropriate given the film’s intense adoration of food.

After hanging around for a couple more glasses of wine and passed appetizers– like mini pizzas (Italy!), samosas (India!), and shrimp fritters (Bali! I think) we sailed out of the party. And in distinctly non-moviestar fashion, I took the subway home, blasting Florence
and the Machine‘s “Dog Days are Over” (the song from the trailer)  all the way to my apartment door.

Eat Pray Love is in theaters this weekend. Do yourself a favor and “let yourself go.”

My feet hurt.  And yours probably do too, if you’ve also been wearing heels all day.  But what are we supposed to do, not wear shoes that make us taller, make our legs look longer and thinner, and just plain make us feel hotter?  No way.

Read on for some tips, tricks, and products that will let you walk a mile in your own severely fashionable—but ridiculously uncomfortable—shoes!

It’s a huge hassle to have to lug an extra pair of shoes in your bag, but if you have a lot of walking to do and you’re planning on wearing heels when you get to where you’re going, you need to.  That’s not to say you should ruin your look with running shoes; I’m thinking something more along the lines of a ballet flat.  Ballet flats won’t take up too much space in your bag, won’t ruin a fabulous outfit, and aren’t going out of style anytime soon.

Take Breaks

Even just standing in place for too long in your heels can be painful.  If you can sit, do.  I know you’re the most attractive woman in the room, but you don’t have to be standing on display to get people to notice that—everyone knows you’re spectacular, so just have a seat, give your feet a break, and they’ll come to you!

If you’re at work, free your feet while they’re hidden under your desk. There’s nothing so terrible your toes could have done to you that they deserve being crammed inside your stilettos all day long!

Get Some Inserts

Now that Stacy London (a notable stylist in her own right, plus co-host of TLC‘s What Not to Wear) has a commercial endorsing Dr. Scholl’s insoles, it’s no longer just cruel to your feet not to try some—it’s downright unfashionable.  The Dr. Scholl’s For Her line has insoles and inserts for a variety of shoe styles and foot needs, so you can find something that’ll work for every pair you wear.

Do Something Weird

The Today Show recently had a segment that included an odd trick for wearing high heels: taping your third and fourth toes together!  Supposedly, binding those toes will make your heels completely comfortable.  The idea is that a muscle in your foot will align, making the ball of your foot “much more steady.”

I’m skeptical, and I’ve heard that the effect isn’t lasting (at least not all day), but anything that could lead to happier feet is worth a shot.

Learn to Love Wedges

Wedges give you everything you love about how you look in heels, but they’re far easier to walk in, and their structure ensures that no part of your foot is forced to support a grossly disproportionate amount of your weight.  You won’t even notice you’re not really wearing heels!

Unfortunately, wedges can be tricky in their own right.  They might not work for certain outfits or events (e.g. espadrille wedges by Tory Burch are iconic, classic, and ridiculously cute, but they’re definitely a more casual summer shoe).  You also want to make sure you avoid wedges that look more disco platformish than wedgelike, unless you’re really committed to a retro look.

Have a Back-up Plan

You might have to accept that you just can’t wear your heels all day long, no matter how great they look.  If you’ve spent the morning and afternoon trudging around in the same impractical footwear, by the time you’re heading out at night your feet might no longer be willing to cooperate.

If you’re totally, absolutely, completely against putting on flats, at least consider changing into a different pair of heels.  Giving your feet something new from what they’ve had on all day might alleviate some pain, or at very least, give you pain in new areas that will distract you from the pain you’re already experiencing!

Practice Makes Perfect

Above all, the best way to be more comfortable in your heels is to keep wearing them.  If you get in the habit of wearing heels regularly, soon they’ll just feel natural!
